I am making this sticky for favorite shielding techniques. I will post some that I have seen described by other people. Every person is different, so one that is great for some will not work well for others, soo try them, modify them, find what works for you

This has been my mantra for many years...

Heart of steel.

Sheathed in ice.

Fortressed in stone.

It keeps my empathy at bay most of the time.

For me, an admitted geek, the simplest is a mental image: Star Trek.  If you've ever seen even one episode, you know what their shields look like.  That's my base, and then I build from there.

The  technique that I use, which seems to work very well, is to build a brick wall around myself.

Start by visualizing that you are standing on a circle of brick. See the first course of bricks laid down in a circle around you. Then see the second course laid down and then the next one. Keep seeing the rows laid down until they are over your head. Once the wall is over your head, brick over the top, completely sealing you in. Visualize the brick and mortar as being completely impervious to incoming or outgoing emotion. This is important. You must tell the shield what it is supposed to block. Raise energy and infuse it into the shield. It is very helpful if you have an empath check your shield for weak spots or leaks of any sort. Any weak spots should be reinforced. Because I was having considerable leakage through the mortar of my shield, I elected to fuse the wall into one solid piece of brick.
The next step was to add another layer of shielding based on my element. Since I am a Scorpio, I put my brick incased self inside a swirling wall of water. Once the shield is built to your satisfaction, you can open windows at will in order to perceive empathically. I visualize a section of the wall sliding to one side (complete with sound effects) when I want to “look out.” As an extra precaution, I equip my window with “one way” glass that blocks any incoming emotions unless I specifically order otherwise. Once you put the shield up it should stay unless you consciously take it down. Until you are used to having it in place, you should give your shield some attention before you go to sleep since you are more vulnerable at that time.
That is all there is to it.

It's working very well for me. And, like Han Solo I've made a few modifications myself... Wink

Good.  Smiley They work best when it's a personal build.

Since someone decided to trample all over my previously well-constructed shields, I am trying something new, which combines the four elements along with my own part in the spirit element. For me this works fairly well because I have a pretty equal mastery of the four base elements, and limitless energy to put into the fifth.

Let us know how that works. Violating people's shields seems to be a popular pastime these days and I can't say I care much for it considering what I'm going through to repair the damage done to my "Self."  Angry

Considering I love the person who did it... I can't give them too much grief.

Still doesn't make me happy though, considering how many years they had been in place and how many things they had protected me from.

Grin I'm nothing if not stubborn though, I guess.

Didn't like the walls I had up... found a chink, and everything just sort of crumbled.  Apparently you're not supposed to keep out the ones you love, but that's pretty darn difficult for me, all things considered.  Never a personal affront... it's just my nature.

Skywise and I have been together for nearly 35 years now and he respects my privacy. The man won't even go into my purse to get gas money. I'm  afraid that if he took a notion to tamper with my shielding, he would have a war on his hands, love or not. Sounds like a bit of a power struggle is in progress, if you don't mind my saying. If so, good luck.

He is a Taurus and I'm a Scorpio and he has learned over the years that there are some boundaries that he should NOT cross. And he respects me enough to honor those boundaries. For my part, I know his boundaries too and honor them. You have to if a relationship is going to last.

Some boundaries are meant to be broken.

And this one has got to learn that I don't like to be pushed into corners... I don't do well in corners, and I don't do well with being told what to do either.  Roll Eyes

I don't either. The last person to successfully give me orders was my late mother and she only got away with that while I was a child. Once I turned 18, I made my own decisions. We had some dandy fights about it but, in the end, she stopped trying to order me around and we were the best of friends until the end of her life.
Have you considered what you are going to do if this person proves too thick headed to learn?

I'm currently on very poor terms with my family, but having a good relationship with them would be nice.  Just isn't going to happen any time soon, I don't think.  They are a big huge GIGANTIC part of the reason my shields were weak... I spent so much time blocking all of their crap.... anyways.  Meh.  Grr.

No... it just sorta... happened.

He's good at catching me off guard... and picked the opportune moment apparently to make everything come down and me let him in.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I had someone watching me -- maybe still is -- and I found it very comforting.

It's a two-way link.  Sometimes good, sometimes a little strange.  I'm used to my mind being my own, and feeling like someone is constantly sitting on my shoulder can be a little... disconcerting, to say the least.
