The World We Live In --- And How it Got This Way.

Twenty thousand years ago, the world was a technological paradise. Poverty was unknown. Disease had been eliminated. Old age and its infirmities were a distant memory. The pursuit of knowledge was the only frontier left. One of the most avidly pursued areas of knowledge was "Crossworld Travel" the commonplace term for travel between universes. A research facility was established and successful crossworld trips were accomplished. Plans were made to open trade with some nearby universes with tourist excursions planned for the future.
No one knew what caused the Catastrophe -- or if anyone did, they took that knowledge to their graves. Maybe too many portals were opened at once. Maybe a portal was opened into the wrong world. In any event, without warning, uncontrolled reality breaches were occurring everywhere. Not only was uncontrolled access to other realities possible but large sections of the planet disappeared and were replaced by pieces of other realities along with whatever living things had been unfortunate enough to be caught by the breach. The very landscape changed. Mountains appeared and disappeared. Shorelines moved. Cities vanished. And then the nature of reality itself changed because not only were alternate universes being accessed but the worlds of imagination were as well. Magic, previously something found only in tales, manifested with a vengeance and the world slid into chaos.
No one knows how long the Age of Chaos lasted but it is known how it ended. The Gods came back. The Gods of Egypt and of Greece -- every God ever worshipped by man came and together they made a stable world out of the Chaos. The world that They made was divided three ways: areas in which only technology worked and magic didn't (like the world was originally), areas in which magic worked and most technology did not work and areas in which both technology and magic worked. Unfortunately (or not, depending on your point of view), these areas were not neatly laid out like countries or continents. They more resembled a jigsaw puzzle: magic next to tech next to both. Sometimes an area as small as an acre would be one type and surrounded by another type. The sentient species -- there were more races than just human now -- migrated to those areas where they felt the most comfortable and civilization began to rebuild. Not the one that had been, that would never come again, but hundreds of civilizations and societies, waiting to be explored.

Penthesilea's Castle -- and why it is important....

The Keyholder's Castle (the formal name) is important for a number of reasons. Control of trade routes is the most minor of them. The second most important reason that the Castle is important is because it sits in the largest unclaimed technology and magic friendly area left on the continent. The nation that controls that land will be a superpower in a generation simply because both magic and technology could be used to develop the country. The last and most important reason that the Castle and its Keyholder is important is known only to the Gods. Deep underneath the Castle in a complex carved out of the limestone is the original Crossworld Travel research facility. All the original equipment is still there and has been maintained by the automated systems and preserved from wear by magic. The upper levels of the Catacombs under the Castle contain those Reality Access Portals that were established and stabilized before the Catastrophe. It is the Keyholder's job to guard these portals and to protect natives on both sides from harmful interaction. If someone unethical gained control of these portals, they could cause considerable harm not only to this world but others as well.

Here are the directions, degrees and distances from the Castle for our locales. The first thing to do is draw two lines that intersect at 90 degrees. The horizontal line is the east/west line and the vertical line is the north/south line. The Castle sits where the two lines cross. All distances are from the Castle. You will need a yardstick or a meter stick and a protractor.

Valcaria’s Monetary System

The monetary system of Samgara is based on precious metals, specifically gold, silver and copper which are reasonably plentiful on Samgara. The amount of precious metal in each coin is set by international agreement.  The coins themselves look different and have different names since each city state mints its own coinage but to be legal for commerce, it must contain the agreed upon amount of gold, silver or copper along with whatever other metal is used in the manufacture of the coins. The smaller denomination coins use more “base” metal, usually nickel or zinc, to avoid making coins that are inconveniently small. The following table lists the coinage of the city state of Valcaria by name of the coin, the amount of precious metal present and the equivalent amount in United States currency.

    Golden Triple Eagle = 2.0 ounces gold/$150.00

    Golden Double Eagle = 1.5 ounces gold/$100.00

    Golden Eagle = .75 ounce  silver/$50.00

    Silver Triple Eagle = 2.0 ounces silver/$30.00

    Silver Double Eagle = 1.5 ounces silver/$20.00

    Silver Eagle = .75 ounces silver/$10.00

    Silver Falcon = .375 ounces silver/$5.00

    Silver Hawk = .075 ounces silver.$1.00

    Half Hawk = .0375 ounces  silver/$0.50

    Quarter Hawk = .01875 ounces silver/$0.25

    Silver Deci = .0075  ounces silver/$0.10

    Half silver deci = .00375 ounces silver/$0.05

    Copperpiece = 1/16 ounce copper/$0.01

Landmarks, Mountains, Mountain Ranges, Lakes and Rivers

This is a list of the major landmarks, highest and/or most prominent mountains, mountain ranges, largest lakes and rivers.

Mount Eternity: North of the Castle, 43 degrees east of the vertical line, 100 miles. This is where the Cold Heights Mountain Range intersects with the Giant’s Rib Cage. Mount Eternity is 29,572 feet high and is the tallest mountain on the planet so far as is known. The summit has been reached by magickal teleportation and technological transporter but never by climbers. Located in a Magick/Tech Zone.

Cold Heights Mountain Range: 80 miles north of the Castle, running straight east to west from 950 miles east of the vertical line to the sea. Total length of the range: 1,160 miles. Due to the east/west direction in which it lies and the fact that it intersects the Giant’s Rib Cage Range at an almost perfect 90 degree angle, the Cold Heights are generally believed to have been transplanted from another reality during the Great Catastrophe.  The Temple of the Western Sea is located at the western end of the range. It is not known if the Temple is also a transplant from another reality. If the residents know, they aren’t telling.

Temple of the Western Sea:  West of the Castle, 9 degrees north/above the horizontal line.  Home of an esoteric order of which Kodiak’s second foster father and mentor, the Master, is a high ranking member. 1,030 miles.  Located in a Magick/Tech Zone.

Mount Amazonius: 28 degrees east of the vertical line and 1,000 miles from the Castle. The mountain is 20,090 feet high. Fallen Maiden Pass, the sight of a historical battle between the fledgling Amazon Confederation and the Bracken Horde, crosses the mountain on the southern side.  The Amazons were led by the legendary General Penthesilea, Clan Swordkin of Themyscira who defeated the Horde’s champion in single combat.  General Penthesilea’s small force of Amazons held the pass against the Horde army until reinforcements could arrive. The subsequent destruction of the Bracken Horde is considered one of the most significant events in the struggle to establish the Amazon Confederation and the highest point of Fallen Maiden Pass where the Amazons made their stand is the site of a memorial to the event with an eternal flame burning in honor of the Amazons who lost their lives in the battle. Located in a Magick only Zone.

Giant’s Rib Cage Mountain Range:  120 miles east of the Castle on the horizontal line, running for 420 miles to the northwest of the line and 1,200 miles to the southeast before dwindling into foothills 510 miles from the southern coast. Total length: 1,620 miles.

Iron Hills:  1,810 miles east of the Castle, running from 320 miles north of the horizontal line on the northern end to 800 miles south of the horizontal line on the southern end totaling 1,120 miles in length. The range averages 160 miles miles wide from east to west. The Iron Hills have the greatest known concentration of dwarves in the world and dwarven lore states that the Hills were once part of a vast mountain range on another world. The range rises out of a relatively flat plain with no foothills and the northern and southern ends of the range end in sheer cliffs which give the impression that the rock was sliced with a knife. These unusual features give credibility to the claim of otherworldly origin.

Lake Imperial: The largest freshwater lake on the continent. It covers approximately 972,800 square miles.  Its southern shore is located north of the horizontal line at a distance of 380 miles. The lake measures 1,850 miles from northwest to southeast and 1,015 miles from north to south. Several rivers have the lake as their source. The Imperial River, the Nyx River and the Thermodon flow from the southern side and the Thunder River flows from the eastern shore to the sea. The northern and western shores are largely unexplored and it is unknown if any rivers flow out from the lake to the north or west. Various zones around the shoreline.

The River of Lost Dreams: The major inland waterway in the area bounded on the north by the Cold Heights Mountain Range and on the east by the Giant’s Rib Case Mountain Range. It runs from somewhere near the summit of Mount Eternity to the Western Sea at Chandara. It flows past Crowhaven which is ten miles to the northwest of the Castle.
