Costumes and props....

Between "Gotta Get to DragonCon" lust, possible LARPing, Halloween (which demands "dress up!") and Mardi Gras it has occurred to me that "wardrobe" is something I should be thinking about!!   Smiley I've about decided to go with purchased, LARP sanctioned weapons since I think that the "homemade" look really detracts from the overall look of the game. For me at least, it is worth it to spend the money, have a "sanctioned" weapon and be thrilled with the way it looks.

Clothing, on the other hand....  I've been sewing for myself for decades and there isn't much I can't do, given the right materials, proper instructions, a clear idea and enough time. Skywise got me a serger for Yule last year that I haven't had a chance to use yet. You can tell what I'm thinking, can't you?

Oooo! A serger! Green envy!  Grin

I don't actually sew well enough to get the most out of a serger, much less my zigzag machine, so I guess it's just as well. LOL

Both my mom and my aunt were sewers so I picked it up early.

My grandmother taught me initially, but I have forgotten a lot, and never learned to read a pattern properly. I do understand fitting and seam allowances, and how to do a french or double seam....like the outside seam on jeans, but I still have issues with layout and cutting and such.

I have hundreds of patterns around here. Many of which I've never had the chance to make up but I got them because I might want to someday. I usually get multiple sizes too. hehehe I can be prepared that way. I still have the pattern to my wedding dress and a complete set of all the sizes that it came in, uncut and ready to go.

This site has more in the way of trimmings than any I've found so far. He doesn't have online ordering so it is going to be a bit of a chore to order but he's got what I want so I'm gonna give it a try.  I'll let you know how it goes. If you are looking for trimmings, check this site out.

I stand corrected. He does have online ordering. It is just somewhat different for the way most sites do it and it requires an extra step if you are paying by credit card. I've elected to pay by check so my order will take a little longer. No matter! I'll have my trimmings!!

The trims arrived today. He emailed me late Tuesday night with his mailing address and I dispatched a check to him yesterday so the process has gone very smoothly. The trims are gorgeous!  I was sitting here with Skywise while he was downloading football stats and trying to decide which of the two trims to use on the planned dress. He solved the problem by telling me to make two dresses. The originally planned black one with this trim on it

and a white dress using this trim.

Although I think a silver gray would look good too.....

I've been going over the pattern for the black dress (Butterick B4571) to see "what's what." The bodice is lined and so is the lower sleeve but the skirt isn't. I'm thinking of adding a lining. It makes it so much easier to make a professional looking hem since the stitches don't show. Skywise wants me to lower the neckline and it doesn't look like it will be too difficult. I'll make the bodice up in muslin (or something close to the weight of the final fabric) first to make sure I don't reveal too much! Smiley Not that Skywise would mind.... Smiley

I ordered some (3 actually) "full face" plastic masks last night to experiment with. I'm still looking for the "perfect" trimmings but I have time and since I don't have a specific design in mind I have NO definite idea of what I need! Gonna be black and silver though with a touch of red. I've got a general idea for one mask. I'll work it up and see how it goes. The masks themselves are relatively cheap so I can experiment without risking too much money! Smiley
