The Kitty Play yard

Late last fall, we decided that the best thing that we could do for our furpersons was to build them a completely enclosed outdoor play area. That way they could be outside to play, lounge, whatever without needing human escorts. We'd originally planned on a simple, fairly large square but after observing the furpersons, especially the Prince of Midnight, we've decided to make as large a yard as we can manage. Since spring has more or less arrived in these climes, it's time to get started. I plan to document the process in this thread.
First up, staking the area. I'll get started on that tomorrow or Thursday.

It will be interesting to hear of your adventures with this.  I have been thinking of something similar but for the monkey.  Of course she is even a bigger escape artist than a cat!

And the thought, well frankly it stops my ♥ briefly ya know Smiley

Yeah. I know.
One reason, the main reason actually, that we're building this is that between April of 2006 and September of 2008, we lost three cats to cars.
The play yard is dedicated to their memory.  However much work it is to build, it's better than digging graves.

I got a bunch of dowel rods today and once they're cut, I'll have enough stakes to lay out the kitty yard. From that, I'll be able put together a specific materials list. Then, we'll start pricing and getting what we need, starting with the deck blocks and the spike thingies that we found. I don't know what they're called but they will save us having to dig holes and set the uprights in concrete.  That way if we ever have to take it down, at least we won't have to dig up the concrete!

This project is still a "go." We've just had NO cooperation from the weather this year! It rained all spring and then got hot as HELL!  We're hoping that the late summer/early fall weather will be more cooperative! We've started making the rounds of the home improvement places and we'll hit the local lumber yards next. We're also going to see if the local Ace Hardware (we're on a first name basis with the owner) can special order Poultry wire for us in 8 foot widths which would cut down on how much we need and eliminate some of the overlaps we'll have to make. We're going to need a LOT of it -- somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 feet -- so it's worth it to order it if it's available.
