When to Harvest

I started a herb garden this year about 6ft by 6ft and I threw in 6 types of medicinal herbs (the 666 was unintentional but cool) now Im wondering when the best time to harvest them is?

The flowers are potent but the leaves and roots can be too. Is there a general rule of thumb? Like roots in the spring flowers in the summer?

What kind of herbs are you growing? Cooking herbs usually can be harvested any time during their growing season and used fresh.  When fall arrives, the plants are harvested and dried for winter use. Other herbs I'm not sure about. The only herb I'm growing at the moment is catnip, mainly for the enjoyment of my cats!  I'm not very good at identification either. I tend to rely on the little identification sticks in the pots!

I grow herbs. Each one is different. Some you want to take the flowers just after they bloom, others you want to wait until they're going to seed. I can post some sites for reference if anyone is interested.
