I've been up for a while but busy. Wrote some checks that have to go out today and then started on the window well problem. All but one section of the drain pipe is glued together and I've made some serious headway in digging the old pipe up. Fortunately it is a short section as I didn't have what I needed to do it right the first time. THIS time should be the last time. I kinda want to get it done today since some serious storms are heading this way with an ETA of 7 to 11 pm. *sigh* Hopefully they'll be out of here by (our late) dinnertime. Right now I'm in cooling off since the sun is shining DIRECTLY on where I need to be digging and even if I was working buck naked, it would STILL be too hot!

*sigh* I had hoped to be digging by now but my work area is still too sunny and the humidity is through the roof so I'm waiting. It's my intention to start in about half an hour. The shade should be deep enough by then. My only consolation is that while I'm waiting, the cement on the drain pipe is curing nicely and should be as solid as possible when I'm ready to start wrestling it into place.

Old pipe is dug out. New pipe is in place but I have to cool off before I do the next step and I may have to adjust the trench a little to get it draining properly. But, theoretically at least, the hard part is done.

I'm hot, sweaty, filthy and exhausted. I may have also gotten too hot. Every stitch of clothing I had on is caked with mud and soaked with sweat. I'm going to finish stripping, get the rest of the mud out from under my fingernails -- I rinsed my hands off with the hose so I could type this -- and lay down until I cool off enough to clean up. In addition to being filthy I stink. My antiperspirant/deodorant was NOT up to today's challenge.
But..... THAT DAMNED DRAIN PIPE IS IN AND IT WORKS!

Well that was interesting. The storm arrived just as dinner was ready. Spirit had her dinner and Moonie was heading for the kitchen to get hers when the lights went off. Fortunately, the outage only lasted a few seconds.
I'm not sure but judging from the noise, Zeus and Thor were having a contest to see who could produce the biggest/loudest clap of thunder. I asked them to take it elsewhere....

We've had serious rain today which would have kept me offline today even if I weren't still aching all over. As it is, I've been catching up on my reading. "The Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction" by Philip Athans is proving very interesting. Orson Scott Card's "How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy" has some useful info too but since it was written in 1990 it is dated in some respects. Both of them bear out my feeling that "world building" is essential for the sf/f writer and that if the story runs off the rails or isn't on them in the first place, a writer should STOP writing until he/she figures out what the problem is. Pounding out thousands of useless words does NOT get you closer to having a finished, salable book.

In other news, I still ache but not as badly as last night for which I'm thankful. Moving my arms in certain directions is still inadvisable though......

I've been blasting through the above mentioned Guide to Writing Fantasy and Science Fiction and it confirms that I've been doing a lot of what I consider essential stuff right, especially in terms of world building and keeping lists, notes, timelines, glossaries and gazetters of people, places, things, magick and how it works and made up words so I can keep everything straight. I'll probably finish this book tomorrow and then go back and finish Card's book. The reference book I need should be here tomorrow *fingers crossed* so I'll be able to get the answers I need to decide what I need to decide. Book 4 will probably be a lot more complex than the first three which were fairly straightforward. Or at least, that's the current plan.

Right now though, I'm yawning hard enough to make my jaw crack and my eyes have said "ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THE READING!!" so I'm going to call it a night even though Skywise isn't home yet.

Afternoon. We went to Bloomington for groceries and lunch and are now back for the afternoon. It rained like heck this morning but I "think" we're done with that for the day. I certainly hope so anyway. I'd like to get my daily walk in this afternoon.

I've put in some time on Book 4 today and on the storage unit. I'm almost back to where I was when I found the problem with it. With some luck, I'll have it in the basement and be putting it together no later than Tuesday. Right now I have to get the glue off my fingers and get a ClosetMaid unit I got today put together. I don't think I'm going to get my walk in today -- the humidity is way too high and it's like trying to breathe syrup -- so I'd better get something else done!

We need a new lawnmower. After over a half decade of faithful service, ours gave up the ghost today -- a broken frame that's impossible to repair. R.I.P. Faithful lawnmower. Skywise got some of the grass cut before it died but there's still a lot to cut. We'll probably be shopping tomorrow.

THEN, we had a massive thunderstorm go through that knocked me offline and it's still raining. My satellite connection isn't all that strong and I could go "poof" at any time.

The band of rain is finally almost through. Dinner is ready and cooling. It's chili and was boiling a few minutes ago and we don't want burn blisters in our mouths so it gets to set a bit before we eat.
Still have the damned headache I've had all day. *sigh* I hope it lets up before bed. Right now, I'm thinking about taking aspirin with dinner to make SURE that it has gone bye-bye by bedtime.
