Madridoor

Madridoor sits on the eastern tip of a large island 80 miles from the mainland and 1,160 miles southwest of the Castle. Madridoor Island is a Tech Only Zone. Magick doesn't work there. Some forms of powers do. For instance, Penthesilea is still an immortal demigoddess in Madridoor but her spells and magickal equipment don't work. Hellion is still an indestructible sword (Hephaestus made it that way.) but the spell that brings it to Penth's hand and the one that makes it invisible don't work. The inspeaking works because it is the result of certain centers in the brain being activated. No magick involved. DocBruce would still be a werewolf in Madridoor 'cause he was born that way. Kodiak's "stepping" technique will work. His ring will get him into Madridoor, and his Lady's side, but won't work once he's on the island. His Powers of Persuasion, his Divine Gift, work because his Gift has changed the structure of his brain. Again, as with the inspeaking, no magick is involved.
The government is supposedly a principality but in reality, the island is run by corporations. The real power is held by the CEOs of the island's major businesses -- and the CEOs that are not themselves True Vampires are controlled by them. The island and especially the city is a hunting ground for vampires. The political situation is currently in flux since the death of the previous Prince Palamedes Demopoulos and the installation of a True Vampire, Hassan Ben Asad Khalid as Prince of Madridoor. Prince Hassan is the CEO of three major corporations and on the boards of four others.

Madridoor (Island and city) and East Madridoor (which sits in the Magick/Tech Zone across the Straits of Madridoor from the main city) have an official population of 1.1 million. The government encourages immigration and tourism and covers up the fact that tourists tend to disappear in Madridoor, especially if they wander into the city's "vampire underground". Slavery is legal in Madridoor and is common. Of the population of 1.1 million, it is estimated that 3,000 are true vampires. The number of people with a confirmed diagnosis of Living Vampire Virus is about 20,000. There is no estimate of how many may be infected and off the Public Health radar.

(Madridoor is a mixture of Tokyo, Las Vegas and pre-Katrina New Orleans with all the vices and virtues implied. Darklord Kodiak's Night Club is located in East Madridoor.)

A note about Vampires in Madridoor

     Madridoor has, as previously mentioned, a sizeable poplulation of vampires and they have their own subculture on the island. Most people, however, do not believe in the Undead or demons. Many people in Madridoor, unless they have spent considerable time in East Madridoor, are skeptical about magick although they do believe in Divine Miracles and the Gods. As far as the population of Madridoor is concerned, True Vampires (undead and demon-vampires) are merely in the advanced stages of Living Vampire Virus (LV2) infection and are to be supplied with whatever health services are necessary. These services include access to blood through the island's bloodbank system. Citizens are encouraged to donate blood by the use of various government incentives such as a tax deduction and cash awards. The True Vampires, demon and not, go to great lengths to see that the public's acceptance of them is not endangered. The non-demon vampires do because most of them want to live in peace and the demon-vampires don't want to have their hunting curtailed any more than it already is.
