	#4108 Penthesilea The sun was sinking toward the west when Penthesilea was approached by the gremlin, Raksha. He carried a clipboard in his hand which he presented to Penth without preamble. Raksha: Daemon say you see this soon as it ready. The clipboard contained 20 sheets of paper covered with closely spaced lines of typing. As she read, her expression grew from puzzled to pleased to elated. Penthesilea: This is all available? Repaired and ready to go? Raksha: Yes, Lady. There's more but not fixed yet. Most everything undamaged or fixable. We fixing fast as we can. Penthesilea: Thank you, Raksha. I will need to speak to you about some special arrangements that we will have to make quickly when the time comes to move but first, I must speak to the Lord Marshall. Raksha: Call when need, Lady. You Daemon's sister and the Light in the Darkness. We do anything you say. The gruff gremlin then hurried away before Penthesilea could thank him so instead she went looking for the Lord Marshall. She found Lord Cujon and about a hundred troops in what would eventually be the complex's drill yard busting out push-ups right along with the men. Still in the shelter of a shadow, she transformed her clothing into something suitable for the drill field and headed toward him. One of his sergeants spotted her and alerted the Lord Marshall, who turned the count over to another sergeant and went to meet her. Lord Cujon: My Lady, what brings you? Without a word but a considerable smile, she handed him the clipboard. He flipped through it quickly, his astonishment growing as he read.* All this is available? Penthesilea: It is. And more will become available as it is repaired. Lord Cujon: You realize what this means? Penthesilea: It means I need you to do some special recruiting. These she tapped the clipboard with her finger will do us no good if we have no one who can use them. We need special fighters. People who can or already have mastered these as well as swords and bows. Lord Cujon: Such people are available but expensive to hire. Penthesilea looked down at the stone covered path she stood on. She knelt and selected stone about the size of a walnut. She stood and held it in her palm and incanted the same spell that changed Jasmine's glass house into diamond. Before Lord Cujon's startled eyes the ordinary stone became a like sized gold nugget. Penthesilea: It is a simple spell really. A minor rearrangement of the atomic structure. I could just as easily have made it a diamond or a ruby. She looked up at him and smiled. That is why you never see a wizard who is really poor. Any competent spell caster masters this in the Apprentice year. She handed him the gold nugget. Find the best people available. Pay whatever it takes. I'll gladly produce the gold necessary especially if it will destabilize the economies of our unfriendly neighbors! I don't know how long we are going to be able to drag out the wedding negotiations. They could lose patience any time. When they do, they will come at us with every fighter they can muster. Lord Cujon: I will send agents out at once, my Lady. I have some specific people in mind, I'll contact them personally. Penthesilea nodded and took back the inventory. She'd keep it in her tower where it would be safe from prying eyes. Then she left the Lord Marshall to his task and returned to the Castle.

	#4112 Penthesilea *The Darklord's Quarters -- Outside* The two Guardsmen stood at the juncture of the main hallway and the cross corridor. Since the most recent failed attack on the Keyholder, the Guard Commander had ordered a guard posted at every corridor intersection in the Main Hall, two guards per intersection on the less frequented residential floors. Since the Darklord Kodiak had returned and taken up residence in his quarters, the guards assigned to the post nearest his rooms had special orders. Any suspicious activity was to be reported at once. So far, the only thing that they had had to report was the arrival of a distinguished older man of what appeared to be mixed asian-caucasian heritage to whom the Darklord seemed to defer. This was not, the guards suspected, the sort of activity that the Commander was interested in. Suddenly, one of the guards poked his partner and pointed toward the Darklord's rooms. A woman stood there, becoming visible as if shedding a cloak of invisibility. She was dark haired and breathtaking. As they watched, the Darklord opened the door and drew her into the room and his arms. Then, he kicked the door shut. One of the guards pulled out a small communications device and asked for a relief. He had a report to make in person. A few doors away, Kodiak and his teacher sat in the later's new quarters discussing what the older man had observed in the Dining Hall while they had eaten lunch.....

It had been child's play to fool the Castle into letting her and her demon plaything come in. She was Keyholder Blood after all. She had a right to be there! The demon in the Darklord's shape forced her back onto the bed, a cruel predatory look distorting his face. He sprouted fangs. Madelyne purred. You know what I like.* He buried his fangs into her throat and gave it to her..... *

	#4114 Penthesilea Penthesilea was dressed for dinner and ready to go down when she received word that Hypatia wished to see her, so she detoured and met the lawyer as she was coming out of her quarters. Hypatia: We've already had some feedback. The "Priestess of Aphrodite" clause and the "Regency" clause are really making them howl. Lord Kennicott insists that he will be Regent for his children. Hypatia gave Penthesilea a wry look. The idea of competition in the bedroom has gotten his goat pretty good too. He's heard about you and the former Lord Marshall. Penthesilea smiled. Penthesilea: My fondness for the Darklord is no secret. As for sharing a bed -- that requires the consent of both parties. I've never ordered a man into my bed and never will. If Lord Kennicott is that aware of the activities of my people, he is also aware that the Darklord is engaged, having proposed to the lady in question quite publicly. I think that if there had been an announcement that the engagement was off, I would have heard of it. As for the Regency... Penthesilea stopped and thought and came to a decision in light of the coming changes in the military situation. it is perhaps time to inform Lord Kennicott that any child I might bear him -- which is not going to happen! -- would be third in line behind my two adult daughters. Hypatia: You have adult daughters? Penthesilea: I do. smiles I'm a lot older than I look. I've had the girls tucked away somewhere safe but I think the situation will be secure enough soon to bring them back. Hypatia: Anything I should know? Penthesilea: Not at the moment. Shall we go? The two women headed for the Dining Hall.

	#4115 Penthesilea *The Darklord's Quarters -- Inside* *The demon in the Darklord's shape was bound to Kodiak's bed -- as Kodiak himself had been bound by Aphrodite -- while Athanasia reenacted that encounter with some touches of her own that reflected her unpleasant personal tastes. She wanted Kodiak -- very badly -- but short of kidnapping him, which would alert Penthesilea and their divine family to her activities, there was no way she could get at him. The wizard Torao-Akio's spell was powerful. The tattoo Kodiak now bore on his left biceps was more potent protection than she was presently prepared to test. She smiled showing the fangs that she'd manifested for this encounter. There was one good thing about the Darklord's new immortal demigod status. There was time now -- unlimited time. He would remain at the peak of his manhood forever. She could be patient and until the time was right, well, she had Rashtarith to play with. She laughed and returned to her games.

	#4116 Penthesilea Dinner had gone smoothly. Hypatia had sat in Satira's usual spot while Lord Cujon had occupied Daemon's and their pleasant company had allowed Penthesilea to enjoy the food and the Jagamatan stout she made a point of drinking with it! Since she could not get drunk -- her metabolism processed alcohol too quickly for her to feel any effects from it -- she had only to alter the flavor to suit her personal taste. Lord Kennicott watched her consume two glasses without effect and scowled. She looked, discreetly, for Kodiak and his teacher but did not see either of them. She strongly suspected that Kodiak had crammed an enormous amount of experience into his relatively short life and that there were still topics to discuss with his old teacher. Her beloved was no doubt sweating out an interrogation that would make any father of the bride proud. When the meal was over, Lord Cujon offered his arm to her and escorted her into the ballroom which had been set up for the night's entertainment -- bardic contests. Penthesilea settled into her chair with her Lord Marshall on one side, her lawyer on the other and her knights behind her and prepared to enjoy the entertainment.

He centered himself and sent his awareness outward. It didn't take long. EVIL!* He returned to his body with a jolt and came to his feet with an agility that belied his years. Grabbing a pouch that he kept prepared for just such emergencies, he ran for the Darklord's quarters.*

	#4118 Penthesilea *The Master's Quarters* Kodiak had not expected his lessons to begin so soon but there he was moving through a form in the middle of the suite's sitting room while his teacher watched. He'd been working for an hour and had worked up a considerable sweat which told him that, as Penthesilea had said, Ares had only knocked the rust off. He still had a long way to go. Suddenly, the Master's head snapped up, his attention to Kodiak's form broken. Master: Something is wrong! Come! The older man bolted for the door. Kodiak snatched up his sword and followed. Once in the hallway, Kodiak saw that the cause of the commotion was the wizard, Torao-Akio, who was chanting loudly, throwing some sort of liquid on his door and scaring the daylights out of the Guardsmen stationed at the intersection a few feet away. Kodiak pounded up to him to demand an explanation when there was a loud "boom" and the door to his rooms silently opened. Kodiak started to enter but was stopped by the wizard. Torao-Akio: No, young Darklord. Wait here. I will go first. Kodiak started to protest but at a look from his Master, remained silent. The wizard entered the room warily, poised to defend or attack as needed. After checking the rooms, he signaled for Kodiak and his Master to enter.* It was here, young Darklord. Kodiak: What was here? Magick was not his talent but even he could feel the wrongness that now prevailed in his home. Torao-Akio: The evil, young Darklord. The evil that hates your Lady. It was here. The old man shook his head. Do not ask what it was doing. He looked finally at the Master, who stood behind Kodiak. The two older men exchanged looks and understood each other. Sleep elsewhere tonight, young Darklord. I will purify your rooms and destroy anything too polluted to save. He looked toward the bed. The evil is centered there. The bed will have to be replaced. Everything else -- purified. Torao-Akio ushered Kodiak and his Master out the door and commandeered the Guardsmen to stand guard over the open door until he could return with the materials he need for the purifications. Kodiak and the Master returned to the Master's quarters. As he settled again into his work, Kodiak could only wonder how long Penthesilea could be safe when the evil that hated her could walk her halls with impunity.

	#4119 Penthesilea *The Darklord's Quarters -- Inside* *Kodiak had spent the night on a pallet on the floor of his Master's quarters. He had wanted to go to Penthesilea but his Master had forbidden it, pointing out that if an evil was fixed on him, Kodiak did not want to give it reason to seek out his lady. Kodiak had agreed. This morning, his body was reminding him of how long it had been since he'd slept on hard stone. Now, he watched as workers, under Torao-Akio's careful supervision, removed his bed, the bed clothes that had been on it and a few items of clothing that he wouldn't miss. Those things, Torao-Akio had informed him, would have to be burned in a special bonfire. Kodiak watched the bed go with a tinge of regret. There were a lot of memories in that bed. Then he stopped and considered. There were a lot of memories in that bed -- but none of them were of Penthesilea. If she was truly his future, it was time to let go of the past. He looked down at his hand. The Consort Band that Penthesilea had given him the night he had proposed to Jasmine was still on his index finger where she had told him to place it if he accepted the position as Regent and Guardian of her Line. Slowly, he drew it off and placed it on the third finger of his left hand. It immediately resized itself to fit. Then he went into his quarters for a shower and a change of clothes. After that, he'd order a new bed from Housekeeping.

He was really a pathetic thing, short and skinny with a huge beak of a nose and a silly mustache. Bewitchment was the only way he'd get lucky. Her standards were... flexible, to say the least, but even she wouldn't touch him! Athanasia: The curse has been broken and Penthesilea has taken a lover -- another immortal demigod. She gestured and Rashtarith, still wearing Kodiak's face and body, stepped into view.* He looks like this. Since the demon had not bothered to dress before stepping in front of the communication mirror, the outraged sorcerer got a good look at what Penthesilea was getting and the unavoidable comparison to his own meager attributes. Allbane: I want her back. Now! You promised that I'd have her by now! Athanasia laughed.* Athanasia: It's not my fault that you couldn't keep her! I helped you capture her in the first place. I can't be expected to go chasing after her every time you let her escape. Allbane: I didn't let her escape! SpiritFire helped her! I want her back... and my daughters too! What will it cost me? Athanasia: I want 100 pounds of Black Lotus starts. Allbane: What? Athanasia: You heard me. And I want an expert grower to go with them. Smiles. I have my own issues with Penthesilea but that doesn't mean I work for free! You want her -- and her girls -- back, you are going to have to buy her. Just like last time. Allbane: I will make arrangements. It's the wrong season here to propagate Black Lotus. When it can be done, you will have your price. See that Penthesilea and my daughters are ready for delivery immediately upon payment. Athanasia: We have a deal. The mirror went black. Without being told, the demon swept Athanasia into his arms and carried her back to bed.....

Two of them. Grown. Both qualified to be Keyholder after me. Any child I bear now will be in line behind them. It is their rights that Darklord Kodiak and the Lord Marshall will guarantee in the event of my death. Lord Kennicott: And their father is? Penthesilea: No one you would know. Lord Kennicott: Are you even free to marry? Penthesilea restrained her impulse to answer in the negative....* Penthesilea: There is no legal impediment to a handfasting. Lord Kennicott: Then these daughters are not legal heirs. Penthesilea's look stopped him in his tracks. Penthesilea: Lord Kennicott. she snapped. You in no way promote your cause by disparaging my daughters! Continue in this vein and we will end these negotiations now! Penthesilea's barely leashed anger had the desired effect. Kennicott backed down. Lord Kennicott: My apologies, my Lady. Penthesilea said nothing, a curt nod the only sign that she had heard him. The negotiations continued.

Every time he thought about Kennicott, about his cornering Penthesilea in the Game Room, about his putting his filthy hands on her, he wanted to kill him. Slowly. Painfully. He thought about breaking every bone in Kennicott's body, one at a time. Starting with his legs, so he couldn't run, then his arms and then back to his feet. Break each toe, then the bones in the foot. Crush the ankle. Smash the knee. Then start on the other foot..... The Master: Kodiak! Kodiak came back to himself. The bag was ruptured. Kodiak stepped back from it. Your love for her does you credit but you will need more than your fury to protect her. Kodiak looked beyond his teacher and saw Ma'ako standing behind him. Torao-Akio: Things are bad, young Darklord. Very bad. We must talk, the three of us. Come. The three men left the Training Hall.

	#4124 Penthesilea *Ma'ako's Quarters* Once they were safely inside his quarters, Torao-Akio threw a concoction of herbs on the fire that made Kodiak's eyes water. Torao-Akio: There! That should keep prying eyes away. Sit, we must talk. The Master: What have you learned? Torao-Akio: The Evil that hates the Lady -- I have not learned its name -- is now fixed on you, young Darklord. It wants to use you to torment her...and to pleasure itself. This evil is female, that much I know. Kodiak: I will not be used against her! I'll die first. Torao-Akio: How much would it hurt her to know that you died for her? That would serve this evil's purposes too. You must not die, young Darklord. That would leave her defenseless. Kodiak: What can I do? The Master: Your Divine Gift must be trained, intensively. You must learn not only to use your Gift but to resist the use of a similar gift on yourself. (pause) And we cannot do that here. Kodiak: (quietly) I promised her that I would be gone for only short periods. You were there. Our love is still too new and before I declared myself, I did everything I could to convince her I loved someone else. I almost convinced myself. She is still unsure of me. The Master: I understand but you must do this or you could both be lost. I know you don't care about yourself if she is safe but if you fall, she won't be safe. Kodiak remembered the vision that Apollo had sent him and realized that Penthesilea's death on a battlefield could still come to pass -- if he died or was drawn from her side. He caught a glimpse of himself at the side of another, facing Penthesilea as an enemy and the desolation in her eyes as she raised Hellion against him... His vision cleared. Kodiak: I will do what I have to. How long before I must leave her? The Master: I will need to locate someone who can train you but we can't tarry here long. If nothing else, I need to get you where this evil can't reach you. Kodiak: It will still be able to reach her. Torao-Akio: I will guard her, young Darklord. I will keep her safe. Kodiak accepted the wizard's word and turned his thoughts to how he would tell Penthesilea that, despite his promise, they would be apart....

	#4126 Penthesilea Penthesilea went through the day conscious that Kodiak was avoiding her. As much as it hurt her, she knew that it was probably a good idea. Whenever she thought of him, she felt like she was glowing and considered it a minor miracle that no one had yet noticed! She didn't know if she could continue to conceal her love for him if they were in close contact for more than a few minutes. Fortunately, those who would be the hardest to keep the secret from were absent from the Castle. Or so she thought... Sir Michael: My Lady. May I speak with you? The tone of his voice brought her out of the report she was reading. She was in her study and he stood in the doorway watching her. Penthesilea: Of course, Sir Michael. Is there a problem? Michael entered the room and carefully closed the door. The hallway beyond was empty. They were as alone as they could be. Sir Michael: No, my Lady. Nothing is wrong that I know of. But I have a question. He regarded her steadily as he took a seat on her desk. I need to know, my Lady, because your happiness is very important to me. Has the relationship between yourself and Darklord Kodiak changed? A tiny gasp from Penthesilea gave it away and Michael smiled. Penthesilea: He has asked me to marry him and I have consented. We can't announce it, of course, not yet. And yes, she smiled I am very happy. Sir Michael: What about Jasmine? Penthesilea: She escaped along with that father of hers. Paradise Valley is a deserted wasteland now. All its beauty was made by magick and they took it with them when they fled. His other estate has fallen into ruin as well. There is no trace of them. Sir Michael: It was a special place.... but I won't miss it. Or Jasmine. Penthesilea: You were deeply in love with her for a while. Sir Michael: She made me love her. I have no feelings for her now. May the Gods grant that she gets what she deserves! As for me, well.. The look on his face told her everything he could not say. Penthesilea: You will find someone worthy of you, Michael. If I can find love, anyone can! She smiled up at him from her desk chair. I will petition Aphrodite on your behalf. If your heart's desire has been born into this world, She will know it and I will find her! Michael leaned down and kissed her, very gently. Sir Michael: A kiss for the bride, my Lady. 	#4131 Penthesilea Raksha arrived within the hour and he and Penthesilea put their heads together and arranged for training and qualification tests for the army. They would be taken in small groups to a cavern that the gremlins would prepare for the purpose. Each recruit would be thoroughly tested and assigned training in any area in which he or she was deficient. How fast the army could be brought up to the standard that the Lord Marshall and the Keyholder set would depend on how proficient they were to start with. Penthesilea: We are also going to need to be able to defend Castletown. We might be able to get everyone into the Castle if we have enough warning. If we don't or there is artillery or air attack we need to be able to shelter the people in place. Raksha: nodding Get engineers busy. Make shelters. Make tunnels. Make places to put anti-aircraft guns. Penthesilea smiled. Penthesilea: You are a gremlin after my own heart, Raksha. Make it so. And hurry! I don't know how much time we have so we should assume that it is about to run out. The gremlin grinned toothily and left, leaving Penthesilea to go meet again with Lord Cujon. As soon as he had them ready, they would start rotating troops through "field exercises" that would take them into the gremlin's caves for training and testing. After that, she needed to see King Orag. And somewhere along the line, she really needed to see a certain Darklord...

There, in the middle of his newly delivered and made up bed, was a very small scroll inserted into what appeared to be a woman's ring. He approached cautiously. When he was finally close enough he saw that it was an engagement ring and he picked it up and pulled the little scroll from it. He unrolled the note and read: This is the ring Penth carried for you before you were stupid enough to give it to someone else. Don't be stupid again! A* Kodiak considered how many of Penth's near relatives could use that initial and sniffed the paper -- Tobacco. Bourbon. Leather. Steel. -- Kodiak nodded. Ares, without question. He found the small velvet box that had housed the ring and put it away. He would see it on her hand, if only briefly, before he had to leave. Two thousand miles away, Jasmine Nightshade realized that the engagement ring that Kodiak had given her, the one she gloated over every time she thought about Penthesilea in the Darklord's arms, was missing. None of her father�s undead servants would have taken it. No thief could have stolen it from the bespelled case where she kept it, displayed on the severed hand of a woman who, long ago, had dared to object to the loss of her lover�s attentions. She didn�t know how but she knew that Kodiak had the ring back and she knew what he would do with it now.... Frozen in rage, Jasmine imagined Kodiak sliding the ring -- her ring -- onto Penthesilea�s hand. Imagined him taking her most hated rival in his arms, imagined him kissing her, slowly and deliciously, while he undid the fastenings of her clothing. Imagined him pressing her down on his bed, covering her body with his own -- making delicious love to her -- and at the very last, as their pleasure reached its peak, giving his Vampire�s Kiss to Penthesilea and sending her into throes of indescribable pleasure. Pleasure to which Jasmine, a succubus, was now hopelessly addicted. It was the cruelest and most just of punishments for a woman who had always tricked men into her bed to steal their life energy. Only one man could satisfy her now. Only Kodiak. With a scream of pure rage and frustration, Jasmine�s batwings manifested, along with her fangs, and she cursed the Lady Keyholder whose friendship she had betrayed, knowing even as she did so that Penthesilea was beyond her ability to touch....

	#4138 Penthesilea *The Keyholder's Study* Penthesilea was back at work after working on Kodiak's still unopened Yule present when Torao-Akio came to her door. She immediately noticed a change in him. For one thing, he had either cast a "Clothing Repair" spell on his robes or had visited the Castle's seamstresses. The other was the expression on his face which gave her considerable pause. Penthesilea: Come in and tell me what is wrong. Torao-Akio entered and closed the door. He took the seat that Penthesilea indicated and told her everything he knew about the entity that had invaded Kodiak's quarters. When he was done, Penthesilea made conscious connection with the Castle and questioned it. She came out of the trance troubled. Whoever it was in Kodiak's quarters, they had Keyholder blood. Torao-Akio: How is that possible? Penthesilea smiled grimly. Penthesilea: I am that rarest of creatures in the Keyholder Bloodline -- an only child. The last Keyholder, my uncle, had three children. My grandfather, who was Keyholder before him, also had three. My great grandmother -- had eight. Torao-Akio's eyes got wide. It doesn't take much of a mathematician to see that there could be a lot of cousins running around. It has been a thousand years, more or less, since my grandfather was made Keyholder. The Keyholder Bloodline is long lived so there could be literally thousands of them out there. I probably got the call because I was the closest surviving blood relative to the last Keyholder. Torao-Akio: There are other, better, reasons, Lady. For now, I must tell you that the young Darklord must go away. For how long we don't know. His Divine gift must be trained as fully as possible so that he cannot be influenced to betray you. Penthesilea: He would not betray me. Tora-Akio: Not in his right mind, no, he would not. But you know, Lady, that the mind can be influenced, especially if that mind has an untrained Gift. * Penthesilea was silent. She knew he was right.* Penthesilea: Will I be permitted to see him before he leaves? Torao-Akio smiled. Torao-Akio: I do not think he would consent to leave otherwise, Lady. You will see him. I promise. Penthesilea: Thank you.

On the desk between them was a thick document that Kennicott had just finished skimming. Kennicott: How much of this is verified? Chief of Security: All of it, Sir. He has a reputation as a ladies man and a hedonist. He is one of the best, if not the best, swordsmen in this part of the world. There are unconfirmed rumors that he is infected with the Living Vampire Virus. He was known to be close to the Keyholder almost from the day he arrived. He publicly proposed to a young woman, Jasmine, about six weeks ago. Shortly thereafter, there was some sort of disagreement with the Keyholder and both the Darklord and the young woman left the Castle. No one has seen the young woman since but the Darklord returned the same day, professing his love for the Keyholder while drunk as a skunk. He disappeared again, rumor has it the Keyholder's father was drying him out, and then he returned a week before Yule. (Pause) If the Keyholder is taking a man into her bed in secret, it is likely to be this one. Kennicott: Can he be bought? Chief of Security: No. He's mercenary but once he gives his loyalty, it's given. He won't betray her now. The Castle servants are split on the question of the other woman. Some claim that they are still engaged while others believe that he loves the Keyholder. Kennicott: Too bad. I could have used an agent in her bed. Kill him. Immediately. The Chief of Security nods and leaves the pavilion. Unnoticed in a shadowed corner, a small black tomcat with a dead mouse in his teeth has heard every word.... #4140 Penthesilea The Black Prince kept the dead mouse in his mouth until he was clear of Kennicott's encampment. Once he was beyond it, he dropped his prey and changed... Where a half grown black tomcat had stood there was still a black tomcat -- the size of a half grown lion. Then he sprang away to carry his news to Penthesilea....

	#4141 Penthesilea Once he reached the Castle's walls, the Black Prince returned to his usual small size. A little tomcat attracted no attention. A black cat the size of a lion certainly would! He ducked into the gate and made his best speed into the Main Building. A quick communication spell put him in touch with his three elders. From them, he learned that Penthesilea was in her office on the second floor conferring with her lawyer. He scampered up the steps to the second floor and ran in the open office door. He scooted around the desk and jumped into Penthesilea's lap and made a big show of rubbing his head against her cheek -- which he did like -- and demanding affection while he passed his message. He felt the chill go through her. Penthesilea: (inspeaking) *Be careful, Beloved! Kennicott has ordered your death, probably by stealth.* Kodiak: (inspeaking) *Don't worry, my dear. I'm immortal, remember?* Penthesilea: (inspeaking) *That doesn't mean invulnerable and don't get cocky!* She heard him laugh through the inspeaking and then silence. She turned her attention back to what Hypatia was saying.

She had been a fool to betray the Keyholder�s friendship and desert her at Jasmine�s insistence. She only hoped that she would be permitted to remain at the Castle. She shook her head. She would ask the Lady Keyholder�s pardon in the morning. Now, all she wanted was quiet and a hot bath. She went to her bathing room. Her hot tub was still there and filled. With a weary smile, she turned it on and began to strip off her grimy clothes.
