Tugtupite is known worldwide for its beauty when exposed to UV light or sunlight. When this happens it's color deepens to pink and sometimes all the way to a deep red. It is found only in MSH, Canada, Kola, Russia and Greenland. It was discovered in Greenland and Greenland is the only supplier of gem quality Tugtupite. The mines are located high in the mountains surrounding the fjords in an area known as the Ilimaussaq Complex, a unique geological formation approximately 8km x 20km in area. Access to these mines is only by foot or boat and material must be carried down the mountain by backpack.

This mineral shows high amounts of tenebrescense which means it has the unique ability to change color. When first mined the mineral is drab in color but when exposed to sunlight or UV light dramatic color changes can happen. If the mineral is kept out of sunlight it will revert to a drab color which can again be changed with exposure to UV light or sunlight. The depth of the color change will vary from stone to stone with the deepest red being of highest value.

For hundreds of years the Inuit of Greenland have had a legend saying that lovers can cause the stone to glow red just by the power of their love. The brighter the red the deeper their love.

Metaphysically Tugtupite (also known as Raindeer Stone because the Inuits believed it got it's color from the blood of raindeers) is a stone of emotions. It protects against negativity and is thought of as a shield against it. It strenghtens romantic relationships by expanding the love as well as the sexual experience. It can be used to open and clear the heart chakra and helps in removing and energy blockages. It helps increase fertility, purifies the blood and stimulates hormone production.
