The Queen decided that I wasn't going to write today. She enforced her edict by parking herself in my lap between me and the keyboard whenever I sat down at the computer. So..... Demon in the Dark will probably be finished tomorrow when hopefully she will be a little more cooperative. I've been considering a few things to go in the gaps so when I do get to write I'll have some ideas to try out.

I've got "Demon in the Dark" open on the desktop and I'll be digging into it as soon as I move the laundry from the washer to the dryer and get Skywise's food bag packed.

Skywise is on his way, the laundry is drying and I'm working. Up to 3,972 words.

One last gap -- a combat -- and the date to fill in and the first draft of  "Demon in the Dark" will be done.

So here it is: New Year’s Eve 2014. This year has been a watershed of sorts. Calling it a “Year of Revelation” is too strong but yeah, some things came to light and not all of them were pleasant. The year started off with us adjusting to the “new normal” necessitated by Skywise’s health. His condition stabilized and even improved a little (his blood pressure came down closer to normal and his eye problem healed completely) and the adjustment to the changes in diet and lifestyle that started in 2013 continued with only minor bumps in the road.

I had intended that by this time my fourth book would be well on the way to being finished in first draft at least but that was not to be. I “thought” that the break I’d taken since I’d finished “Destinies” had been sufficient to “recharge” my “writing batteries” but I was mistaken. Although I knew what needed to happen in the fourth book and how it would end, I couldn’t get started. Oh I wrote parts of it -- significant scenes that had been in my head for a long time -- but other than that, the book refused to come. I found that staring at a blank word document was uninspiring and since I was drawing a complete and depressing blank as far as the fourth book was concerned, I turned my mind to writing other things. I had a number of PDFs that I’d downloaded on various subjects that needed to be edited and put into a useable form so I could actually find the reference I was looking for in under half a day. So I started working on that and sharpening my editing skills in the process. I also started compiling the information that I hope will become the basis of a live action roleplaying game in the coming year. It was while compiling the game that I realized that my fictional world of Samgara had a lot of huge gaps in it that needed to be filled in both for the game and for the books so I opened up yet another word document and started collecting my notes for “The Writers’s Guide to Samgara” which with some deletions (can’t give away ALL the secrets all at once!) will eventually be The Reader’s Guide to Samgara and a Player’s Guide to Samgara for the roleplaying game. All these projects and some non-writing activities got me away from Book 4 and those depressingly blank pages.

There were some people who did not approve of the way I handled my blocked condition and that resulted in some “unpleasantness” about which the less said, the better. However, once it was over and I’d done a metaphorical clearing out of other people’s “negative stuff” from my life, I found that my creativity began to perk up again and as the summer wore on, I realized that I wasn’t blocked so much as burned out. After more than six years of writing nonstop, I was mentally exhausted and, scary as it was to realize, writing had changed from something that I enjoyed and needed/had to do because the story was in my brain screaming to get out to an unhealthy compulsion that left me feeling anxious and “lost” if I wasn’t writing a novel. I had become, in a sense, addicted to writing. I felt stressed and guilty if I didn’t write and I agonized over “new material added” and word counts. It wasn’t good for me physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually and it was a sobering realization. At that point I realized that during those years, I had let writing take over my life to the point that nearly everything else had been pushed aside. Scarier still was the deterioration in my health. I’d gained what I considered an unacceptable amount of weight, my blood pressure was creeping up (because of my weight) and my knees and legs had become so painful after sitting for hours every day in front of the computer writing that I couldn’t stand or walk without pain and on particularly bad days, I couldn’t walk without a cane. Things had to change and once I realized that, I started changing them.

I stopped worrying about daily goals for word counts or pages written and forced myself not to fret if I didn’t write on a given day. More to the point, I stopped giving a damn about whether or not other people approved of my work habits and if I was a “real writer” in their opinion. I stopped giving a damn about the opinions of anonymous people period. As far as my work is concerned, the only opinions that count are those of professionals to whom I submit my work for publication or editorial work. Any other opinions expressed, especially by anonymous posters on internet forums who may or may not have even seen my work, will be ignored.

Slowly but surely I’m getting back into the writing groove. Writing short stories requires a different kind of discipline than novels do and the pressure to “perform” is less. I’m also working on achieving a balance between my writing and the rest of my life. Sure, I want to write for publication, to share my stories with others and perhaps give them a few hours of enjoyment but the days of spending every waking moment writing to the detriment of the rest of my life including my health are over. I want to be able to ENJOY my success when it comes and I really don’t think I can do that if I neglect my health to the point that I’m popping blood pressure medications and/or checking my glucose and giving myself insulin shots while confined to a wheelchair because walking is too painful. I’ve resolved to take time to eat when I’m working -- something I frequent forget to do which is no way to manage one’s weight -- and to spend some time doing things that don’t involve sitting in front of a computer including that dreaded activity: EXERCISE. I may hate it and have to force myself to do it but I’ve reached the point in my life where I can’t ignore my body. It needs regular “maintenance” and the only one who is going to see that it gets it is me.

I’ve designed a “home writing workshop course” for myself using materials from a number of well regarded authors who are also editors and/or workshop teachers in order to approach and execute my work in the most logical and professional way possible. I finished the first draft of my most recent short story “Demon in the Dark” earlier this afternoon and I’ll be going over it and the other shorts I’ve finished once I’ve gotten deeper into my studies with the goal of starting making submissions later in 2015. I’m not going to say when that will be, only that it will be when I think that they are as good as I can make them at this time. I’ll be going over my first three novels as well at some point with “revised editions” the likely result but I don’t know when those will be released. I STILL intend for them to be published in hardcopy and hopefully by a well known traditional publisher.

The year now past in some ways has not turned out the way I’d hoped. On the plus side, Skywise’s blood pressure stabilized and no new problems popped up. I realized how writing and some people were affecting my life and made and are making changes. I found out who and what I wanted to hang onto and what I needed to let go of and at the end of the day, it’s all good. Later tonight with the Skywise, Moonie and Spirit, I’ll raise a glass of something sparkly and non-alcoholic and toast the Old Year out and New Year in.

Happy 2015 to all and may it be a Happy One!

I spent a couple of hours studying this afternoon and since I'm not ready to start working on another story, I pulled out "First Death" and went through it. I edited it a bit and made some adjustments on the complete Samgaran timeline since I needed some "wiggle room." That's all done now and I think I'm going to spend a little time on character creation tonight -- names and "jobs" at least -- since that won't require a lot of deep thinking. And if I get a good "visual" on any of them, I'll play casting director, "cast" the part and hunt up a photo for the file...

I did some more studying today and a little more "casting" which is both fun and helpful. If I know what a character looks/sounds like it makes the writing process easier. I might have to change one or two things in Homecoming due to "casting" but I haven't made a firm decision yet. Some characters aren't going to be cast at all for one reason or another but I'm trying to cast the main ones. Some of my casting choices are no longer with us. Others are being "cast" at a younger age than they are currently. Hey, I'm casting a book. I don't have to worry about age, current looks, availability or even if the person in question is alive. THAT'S the neat thing about books....

I've stopped casting for the night. I'm using too many megabytes doing searches for pictures that match my concept of certain characters. "Zeus" gave me a hard time but I do believe that is settled now and some characters that have so far just been mentioned have been cast.

I've been going through the original Castle PDFs trying to find some background information. I can't find it so I'm gonna have to wing it. Fortunately, I'm pretty sure I remember most of it.....

Going through the PDFs has reminded me just how many gyrations I had to go through to sooth egos, contend with jealousy and just keep the group together long enough to finish the various story arcs. The rewriting was a pain in the posterior to do but it was worth it to get rid of all the Smiley that they dumped into the story. Reading "Our Hero's" contributions did make me smile though.....

The mail was delivered after dark yesterday so I didn't know that the "Dummies" book I was expecting had been delivered until Skywise walked in with the mail. I managed to read a little of it before bed and at first brush I'm favorably impressed with Scrivener. I described it to Skywise this morning as "Cybernetic Pages on steroids". I have one question that I may have to go to the developer's website/forum to get an answer for but I'll read the book first.

Well, I found the answer to the question I had in the book -- several places in fact -- and it's looking more and more likely that I'll be getting that software in the next few weeks. Consequently, I'm going to be going through EVERYTHING that I have concerning Keyholder's Castle and everything that is written in AppleWorks that hasn't already been copied is going to be converted to Pages and deleted off the memory stick. I've got a Castle desktop file that I'll have to think about and I may not make a decision until I'm actually working with the software. At least everything in that file is in Pages!
One very strong selling point for this software is that it has the ability to take my work and convert/compile it straight into the format that Kindle uses. The way that I had to do it when I published on Kindle was to use Pages' "Export" function to convert my work into Word which was then converted by Amazon into their format for publication. This, I'm POSITIVE is what caused all the infuriating formatting errors in my books! Smiley With this software, I can go straight from Pages to Amazon's format and "should" be able to "check the galleyproofs" and make corrections before publication. (I haven't gotten that far in the book yet so I'm not sure. DAMNED LOUSY EYESIGHT!!) So far, it looks like this software is set up to work pretty much the way that I do -- lots of separate files for my research, stray scenes that I'm writing out of sequence, that sort of thing -- so once I've figured out how it all works I "should" be able to adjust without too much trauma. And, of course, I'm STILL working on my self-designed writing course. Smiley I'm not doing a lot of actual writing right now but damn, I'm working hard on it!

I did some casting tonight and I now know what Our Heroine's "main" mortal enemy looks like. I already knew what the two "second string" enemies look like. [It is to be noted that neither of the second stringers consider themselves as such but they only "think" that they're in playing in Our Heroine's league even if one of them is a goddess!] Anyway, I know what she looks and sounds like and I have an idea -- still nebulous -- for her to appear in the short story starring Our Hero. Having her manipulating events makes a whole lot of sense......

I attempted to do a little editing this afternoon but gave up. The Queen kept walking on the keyboard which had me busy deleting her additions instead of editing. *sigh*

In other news, I recast a couple of parts and cast another. I'm still studying the Dummies' book for Scrivener software although I think that it would be easier going if I had the software installed to work with. I've about decided to spring for it and if I do, I can't get it before next week since it's a download and I won't have the megabytes to do it until Skywise is on the superlate shift which "should" start next week.

Well, I stayed up until 2 am Monday morning and -- after I'd downloaded Sanctuary's backup so I knew that I had a good link to the satellite -- purchased and downloaded Scrivener at a little after 2 . "Installation" did not go smoothly but by a little after 4 am Skywise had "bullied/coerced/intimidated" the software into submission and it is now on this computer. I haven't started working with it yet because I know that once I start, it's going to take all my concentration and I won't want to stop and as of this morning, I had a small mountain range of laundry with foothills of dishes waiting for me. I've done four loads of laundry today (Monday) and I'll probably do four more on Tuesday plus getting the dishes finished. So I figure that I'll be able to start working with Scrivener Wednesday afternoon/evening at the latest. I've already determined from the Dummies book that it can be easily set up to work the way I'm accustomed to.
NOW all I'll have to do is convince the Queen that sleeping in a chair next to me is as good as sleeping in my lap.......  Smiley

The Scrivener manual is a 540 page pdf which I am reading as quickly as my eyes will allow. Since my left one is watering so hard it looks like I'm crying this may take a while but I want to get a basic understanding of how it works before I dive into it. I've done  "learn by doing" with software before and it isn't terribly efficient. *sigh* My poor eyes.

Skywise, my HERO, has burned the entire Scrivener download to a disk so I have a dependable backup of it. Yes, I know I could download it again from my software library on Amazon but that is a "cloud" and I trust those about as far as I can throw the Windstar. The power to the server the data is stored on goes down, the generators give out and your data is gone. And besides, if I have to reinstall this program I do NOT want to wait until after 2 am in the morning to do the download!

I am STILL trying to get far enough into the Scriveners' user manual to get started with it but between my eyes and the Queen parking her large self in my lap -- making it impossible for me to get close enough to the monitor to read -- I'm not making much progress. I may have to give up and print at least some of the manual so I can read while prone, on the road or wherever.....

I gave up and decided to print the manual but the Scrivener software decided to give me attitude about it and wouldn't let me transfer the manual -- which is a PDF -- to a flash drive so I could take it downstairs and print out what I needed. Select strong language later, I found a way this morning to transfer the manual -- a page at a time -- to a Pages word document that I will be able to put on a flash drive. The process involves much dragging and dropping and the making of screen shots and is damned tedious but at least when I'm done, I'll have a manual that I can actually read and have a hard copy of for reference while I'm working. I've gotten the first 8 chapters copied and I'm editing them now so I'll hopefully be able to read the thing by the end of the week, tops. I don't intend to print the whole thing but I want to have it all in a word document for reference that I can actually read and print out if I need it.

I am continuing to edit. In addition to changing the font, the size and putting in the paragraphing that didn't transfer with the "drag and drop" I'm "Americanizing" the English. It is obvious that the manual was written by the British. "British" spellings abound and my American spellcheck takes violent exception....

I've finished the mind-numbing job of setting up the table of contents for the word document. It doesn't have page numbers yet but that's a minor detail. Right now, I'm going to wrap things up for the night and crash.

The Queen is letting me work today and I have been taking advantage of it to the point that I'm making mistakes due to eyestrain and since the next chapter (Chapter 15) in the user manual is 40 pages long, I'm going to take a break and rest my eyes before I tackle it.

I had no sooner finished the edit on the user manual than I came down with a cold -- which I'm still fighting. *sigh* Gods willing and I can stay on my feet long enough, I'll get it printed out this week.

In other news, I was thinking about Samgara's past. At the time of the Great Catastrophe Samgara was the site of a major spaceport/transit facility and a tourist destination. There were also a number of major universities and research facilities on the planet. The Catastrophe struck without warning with no time to evacuate. Which means that hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of beings not native to the planet were trapped. The years before reality was stabilized were brutal and millions died but it is reasonable to surmise that enough of those non-native visitors survived to establish viable populations on Samgara. I am currently deciding what those populations look like and broad outlines of their native cultures. The first group that came to mind was a "Green Orion Woman"/Romulan fusion. Next up was a Human/Klingon fusion. I haven't decided on cultures yet, just appearance. Also on the list is a red skinned race with horns. I haven't decided if they have goat's legs and hooves or not. I'm going to see what else I can come up with to diversify Samgara's population which at present looks pretty much like "standard issue human."

Well, I have 170 pages of the manual printed out which is about half of what I want printed out to get started. I'll definitely be using my larp rules as my "learning project" since it has or will have illustrations, photos, tables as well as an obscene amount of text. Getting it finished should be sufficient for me to learn the ins and outs of Scrivener's software. It can even do the screenwriting format but I don't think that I'll be using that any time soon.  Wink
