#3167 Rewritten by Penthesilea
Coronal Dax knew when it was time to cut his losses. The situation in Paradise Valley had been ideal -- great pay, willing women when he wanted them and unwilling ones if that was what he wanted and relatively little work required but nothing had been said about fighting monsters! That business at the Castle the night he arrived had been bad enough but fighting swarms of creatures coming up out of the ground was not in his contract! It was time to get the hell out of town. He grabbed whatever he could in the way of valuables that were portable and easily disposed of. He didn’t want Lord Stephan, assuming that he survived, to come looking for him over a matter of missing property. There was one thing, however, he wasn’t going to leave behind if he could help it. It had taken some time but he had discovered where Miranda was being held. Her eager body would provide him with free entertainment on the road and, if funds ran short, she would be an inexhaustible source of income. He could even sell her outright, if the price was good enough. With those thoughts in mind, Coronal made his way unnoticed through the chaos that engulfed the valley to Lord Stephan’s palace. Chaos reigned inside the building as well as the servants ran for their lives. Coronal knew where he was going and he reached the fourth floor without anyone taking notice of him. He knew where the key to her prison was kept as well at the keys to her restraints and he retrieved them quickly. It sounded like the situation outside the palace was deteriorating rapidly and he didn’t want to waste any time. Faint screams drifted up from the lower floors as he unlocked the door to Miranda’s prison and threw it open. She was, as he had been told, chained to the bed. She had been made ready and had been waiting for Lord Stephan’s return. Fortunately for her, he had been detained by the Scorpion Queen Xanthraldane and consequently was in no condition to molest her or any other woman. Unfortunately, Coronal Dax was there in his place. Still, she had no idea that the man whose lust she had served the night of the reality breech had been aware of her torment from the beginning so when she lifted her eyes at the sound of the door opening, she was overjoyed to see a man who might save her. Coronal rushed to her side oozing concern for her and quickly unlocked her fetters. She threw her arms around him and sobbed out her gratitude. Inwardly, Coronal cursed the necessity of vacating the premises with haste as the promise of a long romp with the grateful woman was almost more temptation than he could resist. Still, he knew that, given what Lord Stephan had done to her, she would need careful handling especially if it became necessary to sell her favors. Speaking gently, he disengaged himself from her grasp and quickly began the search for clothing for her. Even if they avoided notice in the chaos outside the palace, traveling with a naked woman, especially one as attractive as Miranda, was asking to be killed. Miranda directed him to a closet that held women’s clothing and, at his instruction, pulled on clothing suitable for flight. She didn’t know the extent of what was happening outside but the faint sounds that had reached her prison had alerted her to the fact that something serious was going on. She threw some extra necessities into a sturdy scarf and knotted the bundle up. She swept up a knife that her tormentor had left where she could see it and found it to be every bit as lethal as she had supposed. She had wanted to use it on herself. Now that she was free, she would use it to stay that way. Knife and scabbard were securely fastened to her belt alongside the bundle and with Coronal leading the way, they left the room. The hallway outside her prison was deserted and they hastened to the stairwell, descending to the third floor landing without incident. The odd sounds coming from the ground floor prompted Miranda to look over the railing and down to the bottom of the stairwell six floors below them. She could see nothing out of the ordinary but the draft coming up the stairwell was bringing an odd smell to her nose. Some instinct prompted her to look down the stairs. A scream froze in her throat as a scorpion man, his claws dripping bloody gore, came around the corner and glared up at them from the second floor landing. Before she could blink, the monster was swarming up the stairs toward them. Coronal swore once, foully, and grabbing her arm threw her toward the oncoming monster even as he turned to flee himself. Miranda twisted as she fell, landing on her back and sliding down the stairs and under the monster as it charged upward toward the fleeing Coronal. Her slide stopped on the second floor landing and her first impulse was to go to Coronal’s assistance but that impulse was followed by the realization that he had thrown her to the monster to buy himself time to escape. Without a backward glance, she got up and started down the stairs. She wanted to be long gone when that thing finished with Coronal and went looking for new prey. She had just reached the ground floor when she heard Coronal scream and involuntarily, she closed her eyes. She opened them in time to see his head fall past her on the way to the lowest subbasement. She looked up to see the monster looking down at her as it tossed the rest of Coronal’s body after his head. It grinned but before it could move to descend the stairs after her, an explosion tore through the stairwell and the creature, along with a shower of burning debris, followed Coronal’s corpse down the shaft to the subbasement. Miranda didn’t wait to see it hit bottom. She ran for her life and didn’t look back.....
