The room was routinely sealed against magickal snooping and Penthesilea did not wish to be interrupted or spied upon during this meeting. �I�ve taken the liberty of bringing ten of my guardsmen with me tonight. With your permission, I�ll have them assist with security. I�ve also ordered my father to remain in Paradise Valley. I do not want anything to ruin your evening.� Penthesilea seriously doubted that his daughter�s orders would be enough to compel Lord Stephan�s obedience but she let it pass. Her thoughts were consumed with Kodiak and his whereabouts.

She refused to believe that he was dead because if he was, there was really no reason for her to continue living either. She would, of course, but it would be an empty life devoid of joy or meaning. She left her public study and returned to her tower, giving orders that she was not to be disturbed for anything less than an emergency. She went to her bedchamber and sat before the mirror that backed her dressing table. She spoke the necessary words and the room shown in the mirror was not her own but Kodiak�s. She ignored the preparations going on there. Kodiak had given the orders before he had left. She held the medallion in her hand, focussed her attention on Kodiak�s dresser and *willed* while speaking words of power. The medallion vanished from her hand to reappear on Kodiak�s dresser. It would be there waiting for him when he returned.

Briefly, she longed for the days when all she had to worry about was herself and her girls. Her brother, Daemon, was more than capable of taking care of himself and her father was, quite frankly, a force of nature. Now, she had a whole Castle full of men, women and children who looked to her for protection. For a moment, she let her thoughts drift back to when she and her friend, Bladeraven, had come here with their children. Penthesilea smiled. Bladey had always made her smile and she had had been saddened when Bladeraven had taken her son away to a safer place to grow up. A mug of root beer sat on the table next to the tub. Penthesilea took it in hand and held it p. Penthesilea: Here's to you, Bladeraven. May you always be safe and happy. She drinks the toast and climbs from the bath...

The fact that Penthesilea was willing to admit an attraction to Kodiak was in itself significant. Jasmine knew from Castle gossip that Penthesilea had lived as a virtual sworn celibate while living in Dunn�s Keep. No man had caught her eye, as near as anyone could tell, and certainly none had shared her bed. Jasmine had heard of the supposed �curse� that Penthesilea was under and wondered what her father intended to do about it. His plans called for Penthesilea to serve his lust but being incinerated by a Divine Curse was not part of his plan! Tonight, though, that was not Jasmine�s concern, Kodiak was.

While the woman is gone, Penthesilea begins to attach to her body various sheathed weapons. Her corset itself, while looking quite ordinary, was actually armor that protected her torso. The woman returned with yet another box by the time Penthesilea needed help getting into her dress. Penthesilea: Put the box on the bed and help me get into this without mussing my hair. Then, I will need a presentation tray. Maid: Yes, Milady.

She could fight in it if she needed too -- she didn�t anticipate having to do that -- but it would not be out of place at a formal affair. All she would need to do is shed the overskirt, the work of seconds, and she would be ready for battle. She wore her dagger but no other arms. When she emerged from her quarters, her gremlin bodyguards fell in around her. They were in their fully functional dress armor and armed to the teeth. Satira was rather surprised. She had not thought from their crude command of human language that they could be so refined. But in truth, they were as well turned out as any human or elfin knight that she had ever seen.

The maid had gone to fetch the presentation tray and Penthesilea took advantage of her absence to strap on her sword. The black double wrap sword belt did not spoil the line of the dress and she had plenty of freedom of movement. She rested her hand on the sword as it hung on her left side, said a word of command and the sword, scabbard and belt disappeared. No one would be able to see it or feel it until she chose to draw the weapon. The maid returned with the tray. Maid: People are starting to gather in the Great Hall, my Lady. You will have to appear soon.

Just inside the forest line, it sinks to the ground, disgorges nearly a hundred fighters and then takes flight again, drifting back over the wall. The invaders, armed with cloaking spells and magickal one way transport talismans, begin to move toward the Castle.

She arranges it on the presentation tray. Carefully, reverently, she removes a man's ring from the box and holds it in her hand for just a moment. It feels warm, as if it had just come from the hand of the last man to wear it -- her great grandfather. A painting of him, smaller than her palm, is withdrawn last and she puts it into one of her pockets.

One, obviously the mage that cast the transport spell, collapses from the strain, a trickle of blood running from her nose. �We need the Healers! Now!� Daemon bellows and the Healers immediately separate themselves from the crowd gathering for the party.
