Mid-morning found all the work crews tackling the rebuilding of a very large stone livestock barn.  The original spell that had been cast to keep trees from growing where they weren’t wanted was still in force but it was obvious from the fall wood that more than one severe storm had torn through the area. Two sides had been breached by massive trees that still lay where they had fallen and the roof had collapsed. Penthesilea looked at the mess and sighed. She could and would use her magick to assist with moving the massive blocks that had made up the walls. Making the stones lighter so they could be easily set into place was not a magick that would cause catastrophic failure if it was somehow compromised.  Then she pulled on her heavy gloves and started clearing the smaller limbs away.

Shortly after noon the lunch wagons pulled up and the kitchen crew got everything set up to feed the workers. Everyone was grateful for the break and the hot food was very welcome.

DarkLord Kodiak discreetly collected a plate of food and settled himself where he could watch Penthesilea without her seeing him. To say that she puzzled him was an understatement. She was the Keyholder, the landowner and a magick user to boot.  Every such individual that he knew of would not dirty their hands with hard work.  They either incanted a spell to do the task or let servants or slaves do the work. They did not sit under shade trees, dressed as common laborers and eat beef and beans with those of lesser status!  She intrigued him and it had been a very long time since any woman had managed to do that.
Kodiak ate his own beef and beans and watched as Penthesilea sat with her people and laughed.

Refreshed by their lunch break, the crews got back to work. All the fallen trees had been cleared from the barn and the stone masons were doing arcane things with the tools of their trade before they began the task of rebuilding the walls.  Penthesilea checked the walls that were still standing for  any weakness that might escape the eye but would be detectable with magick. She found a few small places that needed reinforcing and then she assisted the masons in making the repairs.  Shortly thereafter she was called to start making the massive stones light enough for one or two men to manage and she began casting the spells.

In a palace, somewhere in the east...

A woman bent over her scrying basin with a vicious smile on her face. Penthesilea was making it entirely too easy! It would be much smarter for her to stay safe inside the walls of the Castle instead of venturing out where she was vulnerable. Not that she was complaining! If Penthesilea wished to cooperate in her own demise, that was fine with her.  The means of Penthesilea’s death was prepared. It had only to be released.

Penth heard the screams, dropped what she was doing and  ran toward the sound.  When she saw what was causing the commotion, she reflected that she really needed to enchant a blaster rifle to come to her call like her sword did. Or maybe a rocket launcher....

It was a rock troll.

Just how it had gotten there was a mystery that Penth had no intention of pursuing.  How to get rid of it was her immediate concern. Killing these things was difficult under the best of circumstances as they tended to be resistant to magickal attacks and as far as weapons were concerned, she was carrying nothing more lethal than a longknife.  An arrow whizzed in and bounced off of its stoney hide. Penth traced the arrow’s flight path bck and saw Bladey drawing back another arrow. Bladey couldn’t hurt the thing with her arrows.  Her intention was to distract it so everyone could escape.

     INCOMING!!!
Penth heard her youngest daughter’s mental voice and dove face first into the dirt as a fireball twice as big as her head whizzed through the space that she had been occupying.
Cut it a little closer next time! She snarked as she came up spitting dirt.

Penthesilea got to her feet fast.  No one had brought really heavy weapons with them on the work crew. They were inside the Mile Wall where it should be safe.  Penthesilea and Spirit were the only magick users in the group.  MoonCat’s magick was of the most basic kind but she never stepped out of her bedroom without a nice selection of lethal devices on her person and today was no exception.  So the main defense fell to the the three of them. If they could kill the thing, great. If not, they had to hold it until everyone had escaped and more help arrived. She saw the troll turn its head toward Bladey who let fly another arrow.
“HEY UGLY!” She summoned and fired off a fireball twice the size of Spirit’s that caught the troll in the backside, exactly as she had intended. It turned toward her, snarling with rage. “BLADEY, RUN!!” Penth yelled as she let fly with another fireball to keep the dimwitted creature’s attention on her.

From his vantage point, Kodiak could see what Penthesilea was doing.  With nothing but her magick, she was distracting the troll while everyone else fled. Her daughters were doing the same. One girl was matching her mother fireball for fireball while the other one was throwing some sort of hand grenades with devastating accuracy.  He couldn’t blame the other workers for running. They were farmers and tradesmen mostly, not warriors and had probably never even heard of a rock troll let alone been attacked by one.  Kodiak pulled the firearm he was carrying and opened fire from cover. These women needed all the help they could get.

Penthesilea heard gunfire over the enraged roars of the troll but she couldn’t spare the attention to figure out where it was coming from or who was doing it.  The troll was pressing them hard, trying to break out of the ring that they had it in. The rest of the workers might be too panicked to think to send help to them but she knew that Bladey would and as quickly as she could.

     COVER ME!
Penth told her girls. I’m going to put a confiinement field around it!
She received wordless acknowledgement from her daughters and fell back to collect herself for the casting as Spirit cut loose with a barrage of fireballs.

The distant sorceress saw what Penthesilea planned. “Not so fast,” she said and made a gesture coupled with arcane words.

With a roar, the troll burst through the confinement field and the resulting shockwave sent Penthesilea and her daughters flying like dolls. Only Kodiak was able to keep his feet when the shockwave hit him and he watched as MoonCat and Spirit were thrown into the trees at the edge of the clearing while Penthesilea’s limp body was thrown against the side of a stone storage silo. The troll ignored the girls as it stalked toward the prey it could see -- the fallen Penthesilea....

A keen sense of self preservation dictated that Kodiak stay out of sight while the rock troll killed and ate the Keyholder. Kodiak’s sense of self-preservation had been known to short out in certain situations and this was one of them. With an obscene challenge roaring from his throat, Kodiak charged from cover to put himself between the rock troll and the fallen woman.

Penthesilea felt her spine snap and her lower body instantly go numb. As she lost consciousness, she wondered how much being torn apart and eaten alive would hurt.
And if it would be enough to actually kill her.....

“Yes,” the sorceress whispered to herself as Penthesilea hit the silo. “I’m finally going to be rid of you after all these years. What?” She heard the sound of a male voice in her scrying mirror and changed its focus in time to see Kodiak charging toward the rock troll. “He’s not supposed to be there! Damnit!!”
With a snarl, she realized that if Kodiak was there and succeeded in saving Penthesilea, she would need to make other arrangements. Fortunately she was a foresighted woman and never let the opportunity go by to collect the means to influence someone who could be useful. She had had her eye on the DarkLord Kodiak for a long time and she had NO intention of letting the hated Penthesilea have him OR of letting Penthesilea’s curse destroy him!

A rock troll was reasonably fast for its size but adrenaline gave Kodiak speed. He reached Penthesilea before the monster did. He could see that she was unconcious but there wasn’t time for him to see how badly she was hurt.  He would see to her if -- when! -- the troll was dead!  The troll was closing fast and Kodiak stood his ground, gripping his heavy pistol in both hands. He would have one shot.
Closer...
Closer...
Kodiak pulled the trigger. His aim was perfect. His bullet entered the troll’s brain through its eye and it fell at Kodiak’s feet, dead.

Kodiak couldn’t hear the scream of rage voiced by the sorceress and likely wouldn’t have cared if he had.  The troll was safely dead and there was an injured woman behind him. He knelt by her side and immediately noted the terrible bruising on her jaw. He felt her neck for a pulse and found it, strong and steady. “You’re a tough one, my Lady,” he told her as he began to check for other injuries.

Penthesilea was aware of strong, gentle hands on her body but she was still unable to move or open her eyes.  Figuring that someone had managed to take out the rock troll, she lay quietly and let the emergency healing spells that she maintained on herself knit her body back together. The most serious injury, her broken back, would be healed first. After that, whatever was most serious would begin to heal.  She heard the murmur of a soothing male voice and she wondered who it was. Whoever it was, she liked the sound of him. His voice made her feel safe and forget the pain that she was in from her shattered jaw. Unable to do anything else as yet, she relaxed and listened to the voice as he talked to her under his breath.

     “MOM!”
     “MOTHER!”
Kodiak could heard the voices of Penthesilea’s daughters in the distance and closing fast. He briefly considered staying, introducing himself and reaping the reward for killing the troll and saving the Lady.  Nah. Playing hide and seek with her was too much fun to give it up just yet.  And it would be fun letting everyone wonder who killed the troll since Penthesilea wasn’t carrying a firearm. That decided, he headed for cover with a cocky grin on his face....

MoonCat spotted Penthesilea first and she and her sister sprinted to where she lay. The troll was obviously dead so they ignored it and bent over their mother. Spirit cast a quick scanning spell on her to assess her injuries and determined that the concussion needed to be dealt with next. The healing spell took only a few minutes to do its work and Penthesilea was able to open her eyes.

“Where is he?” Penthesilea tried to look past her daughters but her body wasn’t cooperating that much just yet.
“Who, Mom” MoonCat asked. “There’s no one here but us.”
“Well, someone was here. This troll was killed by a bullet through the eye and we don’t have our guns with us,” Spirit observed as she examined the corpse of the rock troll.
“Note to self,” MoonCat remarked dryly, “heavy firearms: don’t leave home without them!”

They were still puzzling over the mystery when Bladey returned with the calvary in the form of three of the Castle’s knights on combat airbikes. By that time, Penthesilea’s only apparent injury was to her jaw and the three of them decided to keep it that way. Between them, the girls had removed the slug from the troll’s brain and had replaced it with a like sized shard of rock. It was probably a case of being overly cautious on their part since the body wasn’t likely to be autopsied without them knowing about it but they had learned a long time ago to keep their loose ends tidy.
The medical evac transport came in and Penthesilea was loaded up and taken back to the Castle, mainly to soothe Bladey’s nerves. Back in the trees, Kodiak watched the whole thing and smiled. He’d seen Penthesilea walk to the transport. He was unaccountably glad that she wasn’t badly hurt.

By the time the Healers got to her,  Penthesilea’s most serious injury was a cracked jawbone and the to be expected loose teeth, both upper and lower. They got everything wired into place and left things to heal on their own. The Healers already knew that Penthesilea healed quickly so they were satisfied to send Penth to her own bed for the rest of the day after extracting her promise to return the next day for a check up.
