	#1247 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] It didn�t take Kodiak long to discover that Jasmine had followed him out to the Castle. He wasn�t sure whether to be flattered or annoyed. She was pleasant enough in bed but to be honest, he needed more than she could provide which was true of most women. She might provide a bit of diversion and, perhaps, a bit of competition for Penthesilea if he needed that but anything other than that was out of the question. He hadn�t yet decided intellectually whether or not to pursue the Keyholder. His physical and emotional reaction to her had unnerved him more than he wanted to admit. It was as if he had always known her and they had yet to exchange a single word. For a man who prided himself on being in control of every situation, the out of control feelings that Penthesilea inspired did not sit well. He wanted to possess her and simultaneously, he wanted to get as far from her as he could. He would continue to observe from concealment until he had decided one way or the other.

	#1249 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Jasmine had taken lodging in a newly opened inn on the far side of the Castle�s lake. She wanted quarters in the Castle but hadn�t found a way to get them yet. Every day she found reasons to go to the Castle and snoop around. She was hoping to �bump into� Kodiak since that tactic had worked before and while she had caught tantalizing glimpses of him, she hadn�t been able to catch him. She had finally figured out where he was living, the Old Mansion that the Nightkin were using, but her attempts to gain entry were constantly foiled by whoever had doorkeeper�s duty at any given time. She asked for him and they told her that he wasn�t there even when she had seen him enter moments before. She was greatly tempted to try to force her way into the house but restrained herself. There was no way that she could force her way past a half vampire and trying would likely do her cause more harm than good. She needed a plan to get him to reveal his presence to her and she began to think along those lines.

	#1250 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Jasmine saw her opportunity after a few days of observation. The lake was an abandoned limestone pit that had had its bottom sloped and smoothed for use as a water source and for recreation. It was irregularly shaped and several deep inlets had wooden bridges over them. A challenge to walk across one of these bridges on the narrow guard rail had become a common dare among the young and daring of the estate. The really daring had taken to performing handstands and other such stunts on the railing. Jasmine had learned that Kodiak frequently took walks around the lake just after sunset and his favorite route took him across one of those bridges so she began to watch for him. Finally, he appeared and she put her plan into action. She started across the bridge and when she was about halfway across and she could see that Kodiak was close enough to see her and come to her rescue, she hauled herself up onto the railing and attempted a handstand. Jasmine could perform a handstand without any problem on the ground. The guardrail was somewhat trickier than she had figured. Her balance shifted and with an entirely genuine scream, she fell from the rail into the lake twenty feet below her. The impact knocked the air from her lungs. She began to panic but then strong hands grabbed her and hauled her to the surface. She came up coughing and sputtering but overjoyed that her scheme had worked so well. Kodiak had saved her! Then she looked at her rescuer and realized that the man pulling her ashore was one of the estate�s waterguards. He carried her out of the water and up on the shore to where Penthesilea was standing. She had come at the sound of Jasmine�s scream. Still coughing a bit, Jasmine looked around and saw Kodiak standing a bit back in the crowd. Furious, she glared at him.

	#1251 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Kodiak saw the waterguard dive into the lake seconds after Jasmine�s scream and the two of them hit the water at about the same time. Kodiak knew a set up when he saw one and had no intention of falling for this one. Not when there were qualified waterguards on duty. Something that Jasmine obviously had not noticed. He watched the man carry a sputtering Jasmine from the water and chuckled at the accusing glare she threw in his direction which confirmed his suspicion that she had been attempting to trap him into rushing in to save her. He responded to her glare with a grin and a waving finger of admonishment.

Jasmine looked back over her shoulder in time to see a grinning Kodiak turn and walk in the other direction and suppressed the urge to scream in frustration.

I will have to go back and thank him later.� Privately, Jasmine was more than a little annoyed. Kodiak had made no move to come to her rescue as she believed that he would. Being pulled from the water by a waterguard did not fit in with her plans at all! Still, making the Keyholder�s acquaintance was probably worth a dunking!

	#1254 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Once inside the Castle, Penthesilea settled Jasmine next to one of the Main Hall�s fireplaces and ordered a hot drink for her. While Penthesilea was busy with that, Jasmine took the opportunity to observe her unnoticed. She did not like what she saw. Everyone had heard that the Lady Keyholder had no lover or Lord and the supposed reason for that lack. Jasmine had been of the opinion that Penthesilea�s vow to bed no man who had not defeated her in battle was a smoke screen to cover the fact that she couldn�t get a man into her bed by any means. Looking at her, that was obviously not the case. Penthesilea was beautiful with long red hair and vivid green eyes set in a classically beautiful face. Her body was lithe and strong and she had the grace of a dancer or a warrior with curves that a man would ache to touch. No. Jasmine didn�t like what she saw at all. But until she had what she wanted, she would pretend otherwise. The fact that Kodiak�s inquiries about Penthesilea indicated that he had some interest in her didn�t please Jasmine much either. Kodiak was hers! She had seen -- and had! -- him first and no man left her! She discarded them when she was ready, not the other way around!

Then, both warm and dry, Penthesilea took her back down to the Main Hall where everyone was beginning to gather for the night. Penth was of the opinion that there was nothing like a pleasant evening making new friends to get over the embarrassment of making a complete idiot of yourself. And this girl seemed to be in need of friends. Penth left her by the fire with a group of young people who were listening to a bard. �This is Jasmine,� Penthesilea told them. �I hope you will make her feel welcome.� Then she took her leave.

It isn�t long before she hears that Sir Michael had made Jasmine�s acquaintance by the fire and that they had left the hall together. Penthesilea chuckled. Michael was a handsome devil and obviously not one to waste time!

She had permitted him to seduce her and it had occurred to her during the proceedings that Michael would be useful in making Kodiak jealous. He was also handsome and had status in Castle society and a handsome, skilled and high status man was never to be dismissed lightly. She would use him to get into the inner circle of the Castle and close to the Keyholder. Having made her decision, she got out of bed, washed and headed for the Dining Hall.

She wasn�t having much luck with the offspring but the Keyholder herself seemed to have a nurturing instinct that wouldn�t quit and Jasmine exploited it at every opportunity.

At first she thought that it was the mysterious man that she had been catching glimpses of lately but a second look identified the person as Jasmine. The girl seemed to be in some distress so Penthesilea yielded to her maternal instincts and went to where she was sitting. �Are you all right, Jasmine� You seem a bit sad,� Penthesilea asked.

Do you have any advice for me?� If the truth were known, Jasmine had no intention of giving up on her pursuit of Kodiak. She merely wanted to plant the idea in Penthesilea�s mind that Kodiak was �taken� when the infuriating cad decided to make his presence known to the Lady. Jasmine wasn�t willing to trust to any �vow� to keep Penthesilea away from Kodiak once she saw him. And there was always the possibility that Kodiak would be able to defeat the lady in combat, making her vow a moot point!

If it is his heart that is dark, if he is cruel and unfeeling -- run, don't walk, away as fast as you can! 'Cause, romance ballads aside, no man was ever really changed by the love of a good woman.� Penthesilea suspects that the man Jasmine is referring to is not Sir Michael and she knows of no DarkLords in the area but she long ago learned that giving more advice than was asked for was usually a waste of time.
