Sugilite was first discovered by Professor Kenichi Sugi (for who it is named) in Southern Japan in 1944. The find was small and it disappeared into obscurity until 1975 when a significant find was discovered at the Wessels mine near Kuramen in South Africa. A major pocket was unearthed, over 3000 feet below the surface, in 1979 and it did not take long for Sugilite to become a much sought after stone for jewelry and carving. The Wessels mine is by world standards a large producer of Manganese and Sugilite is one of the minerals that are found there as a by product. It intergrows with the manganese and is generally found in isolated pockets. It is reasonably scarce and extremely desirable amongst both jewelers and carvers. This has caused it to become expensive.

In 1975 the only deposit of gem grade Sugilite was discovered here 3200 feet below ground with the pocket estimated at 10 to 20 tons. The opaque Sugilite demands a fairly high price at about $25.00 ct. but about 1/10 of 1% is also found to be translucent and this stuff demands a very high price worldwide.

It is associated with the third eye and crown chakras. It lessens effects of shock and disappointment. In addition to its well known enhancement of healing ability, it also strengthens spirituality, psychic ability and channelling. exce;;ent to ward of psychic attacks and psychic vampirism.
