	We just got home, found out about the horrendous wreck at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and are waiting, like the rest of the racing world, for word on Dan Wheldon's condition. Apparently, it was very bad. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor/indycar/story/2011-10-16/las-vegas-300-dan-...

	There were 12 or 13 cars involved. Wheldon was the most seriously injured. They are getting ready to have a press conference, no word on when it is going to start though. There is a meeting going on right now according to the radio. They were going around 225 miles per hour when the wreck happened.

	Oh my heavens.... I can't find anything on any of the channels we have on the TV... Drat. No use for me to try to get something on the online radio stations, they do NOT compute with dial up connections!!

	He's gone. Dan Wheldon. May he rest in peace. The race is over but they will give him a five lap tribute before they close down today. There will probably be a tribute for him at next year's 500 as he was this year's winner.

	Yeah. He was a last minute entry in the field which was, by all accounts, unusually large. The racing community is very close and this will hit everyone very hard.

	A former friend of mine was into Nascar and she once told me how close the racing community is.... Wow, it's a shock and very upsetting to us who aren't racing fans too. Hearing about someone losing their life in a way like this... Unbelievable.

	When you travel from track to track over the course of the racing season, year after year, your competitors and their teams are the people you see the most of. It isn't like a "regular" office job where you might not see your co-workers outside of work. I don't know how it is at other racetracks but at Indianapolis, the teams --drivers included -- live INSIDE the track. It is so big that they pull in their caravans of motor homes (many quite lavish) into the parking areas set aside for them and just live there for the two weeks of practice, qualifying and the race. The wives have lunch together, the kids play together and everyone hangs out after "work."

	Spirit has been watching the news and is crying. Auto racing is her favorite sport, I think. I know that she loves going to the track for "Bump Day" very year. Officially, fifteen cars were involved in the wreck out of a field of 34. �The field at Indianapolis is restricted to the 33 fastest cars. The speedway track at Las Vegas is a mile shorter than Indianapolis and is what is called a "tri-oval" which is basically a triangle with curves at the corners. 	The local channels that have news at 10 p.m. are full of coverage of the wreck. I suspect that the others, who have their news shows at 11 will be the same with extended coverage. I got a glimpse of the wreck itself and it was horrible. �Earlier tonight, Skywise had the television on and they announced Dan Wheldon's death. 	We've had J's cousin and her daughter with us for most of the week, and it's been so, so crazy. Tonight was the first night we actually had quiet. His aunt, who we're living with now, is already up in bed, and J and I were watching a movie, and he wrapped his arms around me, hugged me, and said, "It's so quiet, and we're alone." It's soo, soo, soo nice now LOL

He's laying down right now and I've been doing outlines and figuring out some things that WILL work with the story... I told him what was going on and he's been very understanding. Of course, he said if I needed anything "disgusting" for the story to consult him... Um..................... No offense to Hubby but this is a mainstream romance novel, NOT something one would see at an "adult" store or "extreme adult" store.... I have figured out some things.. I'll update in my Writings and Grumblings thread shortly. So it's a rainy day here in my part of NS... Heavy rains right up until this afternoon. JOY OH BLISS!! So glad I have both a slicker and an umbrella for my ventures to the bus stop!! Hubby and I will be running errands later... Or he will, it all depends on what time he wakes up from his nap. He didn't get to sleep until about 3ish last night and was up at 6:30 to do his "going to work" ritual so Son would go to school thinking Daddy would NOT be home. (If Son was a non ASD child and was okay with Daddy being home without him, we wouldn't be doing this, but Son gets REALLY upset and won't do his school work if he has even an inkling that Daddy is home!!).... So Hubby went upstairs to catch up on the sleep he didn't get last night. I've had Word open on and off all morning long... As y'all know from earlier in this post. Time to check my SP Pets, get another coffee, update my Writings thread and get caught up quickly!!

It was so scary it took my breath away. Hubby saw it this morning and he is in shock also. We are not racing fans here for the most part but still feel awful when we hear of something like this. And yes, Spirit probably does understand more than she can verbally express... Like her sister, she's a smart young lady. My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Wheldon's family, friends, loved ones, fans and the rest of the racing world. SIGHS

	Morning. It's clear and chilly today. I really feels like fall although it doesn't look it, really. There is a thick carpet of leaves on the ground but many/most of the trees still have all their still green leaves on them. Yes, it was horrible. There hasn't been a wreck that bad in a very, very long time. And it was the first fatal crash since '06. They engineer these tracks to be as fast as possible and I think that is a mistake. Human reaction time has its limits and I think that the limit was being pushed Sunday with tragic consequences.

	We were watching something about how the tracks were engineered on one of the news shows earlier... It's amazing just how much they DO push things and how narrow the track was in Vegas compared to the one in Indianapolis. (I THINK!)
