	#5283 Penthesilea *Once she was free of fittings, Hypatia took Penthesilea in hand and they began to go over the details of the arrangements. Of particular concern was the seating arrangements both in the Cathedral during the ceremony and at the feast afterwards. There were Heads of State from several nations on the list who were at odds. None of them could be cut from the list lest they take offense. Offended Heads of State tended to make things difficult for fledgling countries -- up to and including declaring war!! The two of them spent three hours sweating over seating charts trying to keep warring -- or nearly warring -- parties apart while also being sure that no one felt slighted. Penthesilea had known that aristocrats could be touchy about precedence and honor but the thought of declaring war because someone they believed inferior was seated closer to the bride was absurd! Yet, Hypatia assured her that it had happened. The menu for the feast had to be planned just as carefully. The fact that some of the guests would be true vampires -- Prince Hassan of Madridoor had already indicated that he and his party would attend before the invitations had even been issued -- made matters even more sticky. Several nations from the Eastern Coast had a "Kill on sight" policy toward vampires.... Penthesilea was beginning to get a headache...

	#5287 Penthesilea Penthesilea emerged from the planning session with Hypatia feeling more stressed out than she ever had before battle. She entered the Main Hall and saw Kodiak deep in conversation with his brother, Lord Marshall Cujon. She stopped to admire the view. The two men were nearly identical and it was almost more masculine beauty than one room could contain. Then she looked closer and grew concerned. It did not look like they were discussing the bachelor party. She made a beeline for them. Penthesilea: Something I should know about? Lord Cujon: There is a problem, my Lady. At the word "problem" Penthesilea's expression became slightly crazed and she took the Lord Marshall's shirt firmly in both hands.* Penthesilea: I just spent three hours making seating arrangements that I hope will keep my wedding feast from turning into a war zone! Her grip tightened and she attempted to shake the Lord Marshall. She failed and Kodiak reached in to attempt to free his brother from his bride's vicelike grip. Do. Not. Tell. Me. That. There. Is. A. New. WAR! The Lord Marshall was more than a little alarmed by Penthesilea's intensity and he joined his brother in his attempt to pry Penth loose. Lord Cujon: No! No, my Lady. No war. Penthesilea relaxed. Penthesilea: No war? You're sure? Both men nodded quickly and Penthesilea finally let go of her Lord Marshall. Kodiak kept hold of both of her hands. What is the problem then? Lord Cujon: We've had reports of raiders, my Lady. In the far southeast.He took a breath and plunged on. We think that they are vampires. Penthesilea got very still and then held Kodiak's hands very tightly. Penthesilea: Vampire raiders? How good is the intelligence? Lord Cujon: The reports came from survivors. Children. Penthesilea closed her eyes in grief for the children, knowing what they must have seen. Penthesilea: I assume that our outposts have been alerted. Cujon nodded. Very well, Lord Marshall. Keep me informed. I'll scry for them but it probably won't do much good. Such creatures know how to hide. Cujon nodded and left them, saddened that their happiness should have such a cloud over it.

	#5292 Penthesilea The next morning saw Penthesilea hitting the ground running. Not only were Handfasting tasks waiting for her but the duties of the Keyholder as well. Representatives of three more nation/city states had arrived to formally recognize the new country and establish diplomatic relations. Kodiak took as much of the load as he could and between them, they managed to avoid any major diplomatic incidents.

They knew that it was a good idea for both of them to build and maintain good relations with the people who lived in the Castle. The Darklord went out of his way to be charming all too aware of the whispers circulating through the Castle.

	#5295 Penthesilea The afternoon found Kodiak and Penthesilea in the Lord Marshall's office with Cujon pouring over intelligence reports. Lord Cujon: The purge of demon-vampires in Madridoor and East Mardridoor has spread to Chandara and Chilcotin. Unfortunately, those purges have not been as thorough as Madridoor's was. From the reports we're getting, there are at least four bands of vampire raiders operating along the southern coast. Kodiak: Not much population down there. Penthesilea: No there isn't. She looked at Cujon. They are going to be heading this way, aren't they? Lord Cujon: We believe that they are taking prisoners. There are people unaccounted for. They will be using them as food sources until they can establish themselves in another populated area. Kodiak: Which won't set well with any vampires already in residence. Penthesilea: With helpless humans in the middle. She shuttered. She had barely escaped an eternity as a blood and sex slave to vampires. She would do whatever it took to rescue any unfortunates that she found in that position. Start tracking them, Lord Marshall. We don't want them to get the opportunity to set up a stronghold around here. Demon-vampires can't be reasoned with. They have to be destroyed. Kodiak: I agree. They have no souls. They are predatory animals disguised as humans. Kodiak's expression closed and his eyes glowed, just a little. Penthesilea wondered what he was thinking but his mind was closed to her. Then he looked at her and smiled and was himself again..

	#5296 Penthesilea Shortly after the conference in the Lord Marshall's office, gremlins in small airsleds began to leave the Castle heading east and south. They would scout for raiding parties that might be hidden by magick from scrying. If they found anything interesting, it would be investigated more closely....

	#5297 Penthesilea The report came in an hour after sundown. A vampire raiding party was closing in on a small settlement within the lands that had declared for Penthesilea. Not that it mattered. Penthesilea would have ridden to the defense of anyone so threatened. Ma'ako cast the Portal Spell on the Castle's Main Gate as Penthesilea, with Kodiak riding at her side, led a force of warriors to the rescue!

	#5304 Penthesilea The rescue party found themselves slightly outnumbered but the presence of the Darklord and his Lady more than evened the odds. Kodiak's reputation for savagery in battle was justified as he fell upon the raiders like a storm. Those raiders who were still in their saddles were quickly killed. They were not accustomed to mounted fighting while the men selected to ride with the Darklord and Penthesilea were. Those raiders who had dismounted to take victims fled into the settlement to hide in the spaces between the buildings or in the houses themselves. With Kodiak leading the way, the rescue party followed...

	#5305 Penthesilea Penthesilea cast a quick detection spell in hopes of finding the vampires quickly. The spell showed her nothing. Penthesilea: They probably are carrying amulets of the "Escape Detection" class. I could probably find the right counterspell but we could have them rooted out and killed in the time that would take. Penthesilea noticed that Kodiak's eyes were glowing with unusual intensity. Kodiak: Let's go then. Before anyone else is killed.

	#5306 Penthesilea The rescue party split into groups of threes and fours and started searching the settlement. They quickly discovered that most of the population that was able to had taken refuge in the temple behind its barricaded door, leaving all the other buildings open and empty. Penthesilea entered the settlement's stable with two men behind her. They moved cautiously. The horses were nervous. Understandable under the circumstances but it could also mean that someone or something was hiding there...

	#5309 Penthesilea Penthesilea was knocked to the floor as two vampires landed on her, apparently believing her to be an easy meal. She heard swearing as her two companions were also attacked and the vampires discovered the heavy leather neck guards she and the men were wearing. Penthesilea was hauled to her feet by one vampire as the other grabbed her arm, intending to feed from her wrist. First Vampire: Don't drain her, this one's worth keeping! The other vampire didn't answer as he bit into Penthesilea's arm. Penthesilea screamed and kicked out, catching the attacking vampire in the crotch. Vampire or not, he was still male and while the effect wasn't as drastic as she had hoped, he released her arm. Bleeding heavily, Penthesilea heard one of her companions scream but she couldn't help him. She had her own problems. She grabbed her vampknife with her wounded arm and stabbed the vampire holding her with it. It wasn't a heartblow but it hurt and he released her. Before he could grab her again, she plunged the vampknife into his heart. Then she saw one of her companions with his neck exposed as he was held between two vampires. The third member of the team was down, a vampire feeding noisily on him. Without hesitation, Penthesilea threw the vampknife at the creature about to sink his fangs into her companion. It struck home and the vampire died. Then the vampire she had kicked tackled her and pinned her to the stable floor....
