	#4730 Penthesilea Once Karika was safely on her way with the book, Penthesilea and Kodiak got really busy. He had to speak to the Lord Marshall and Penthesilea had to get updated on the Black Lotus research. She instructed Torao-Akio to turn the archway between the Main Courtyard and the Commons into a magickal transport Gate and to link it to the one at the Temple. Activation was to be limited to himself, Penthesilea and SpiritFire with others added later if needed. Karika would, of course, be able to activate her side of the Gate. Once all that was done and Penthesilea had given her Lord the rundown on the BL research, it was time to return to Madridoor.....

Ares reaction to their appearance was to seize Kodiak in a bear hug that would have broken a mortal man's ribs. Penthesilea chuckled both at the look on Kodiak's face and the fervor with which the Wargod greeted his future son-in-law. Penthesilea: Rough day, Father? Ares released Kodiak and turned to his daughter. Ares: You have no idea! Turning back to Kodiak. How do you keep from killing them? Kodiak: Sometimes, I don't. Ares beamed and slapped Kodiak on the back. Kodiak managed to remain standing. Demigodhood had its advantages. Penthesilea: Perhaps we should get on with the briefing, Father. Kodiak and I should be at work soon, I'd think.* Ares nodded and they got down to it.*

He was a God and could do many things. One thing he could not* do was pretend to be his daughter's lover! He'd managed the previous day in a work situation with a woman that looked very little like Penthesilea. SpiritFire had just sent her everything the University library had on the effects of Black Lotus on the human brain. The experts were pretty sure that BL affected all the humanoid races the same way since they all had similar brain structures. Even more important, there were a number of Black Lotus addicts, human and non human, at the University who had already volunteered to be test subjects for any potential cure. No pressure, MoonCat thought to herself.....

Strychnos toxifera. Curare. A poison for which there was no antidote or treatment. Yet......

They found her staring at a glass wall upon which two chemical formulas were written. The first one was C18 H35 N. The second, written below the first was C8 H10 O2 N4 O She turned toward them with a look in her eyes that her sister recognized. She pointed to the first formula. MoonCat: That is our killer. Curarine, commonly known as curare, a Level 6 toxin. This she pointed to the second formula. is caffeine, a Level 3 toxin. Our mission, which we have accepted, is to alter Black Lotus so that when the addictive compound in it degrades in the body, it becomes caffeine instead of curarine. Torao-Akio: Caffeine is also a poison. MoonCat: Very true but.... the amount of caffeine produced by this reaction would be about 100 milligrams -- about average for a cup of coffee. That much curarine kills. SpiritFire: And we have to alter the entire world's supply at the same time so that everyone is dosed at the same time and no one dies. MoonCat: We'll find a way. Once this she indicated the formulas is done! Now, let's get started!

Any shipment coming to Madridoor would have to come from the desert and the only way to get fresh leaf there was to use the Castle's transporters. They could be sending the dry ginger root form but Penth and Kodiak did not feel inclined to assume that. So, while Kodiak kept watch, Penthesilea made contact and filled everyone in on the new timetable.

Hypatia: 517 to be precise. Penthesilea: Mother of Gods! Why so many? Hypatia: Politics. You are going to have to cultivate good relations with everyone you can. That means you can't risk anyone feeling snubbed. Penthesilea: The Castle can't possibly hold a wedding that big -- even if we knocked out the wall between the Great Hall and the Ballroom. Hypatia: That's the other thing. She handed over a roll of blueprints. We're going to need to build a new temple.....

It needed to be inside the Mile Wall or close enough to it so a new wall extension could be raised to enclose the temple and its grounds. With the guest list already filled with Heads of State and their attendant nobility and more expected to be added before all was said and done, security was going to be of prime importance. It quickly became apparent that the new temple would have to be outside the Mile Wall. The estimated size of the temple, its attendant buildings and gardens was looking to take a hundred acres.....

SpiritFire: We've worked out a substitute sequence to turn the curare to caffeine but we still need a mechanism to produce the change. We need to mutate the Black Lotus, even any stored spores, so the changes will breed true. And we have to be sure that if any new Black Lotus appears from somewhere, it will immediately mutate too. MoonCat: That's a tall order. Torao-Akio had been listening to the sisters' conversation. He had learned much about techno magick in the past weeks working with the sisters. He had a question. He held up a sealed bottle. Torao-Akio: Would these work to produce this..mutation? The sisters stared at him. Then at each other. Then they rushed the old wizard and hugged with all the exuberance they could muster, which was considerable. MoonCat & SpiritFire: You're a genius!! Then they kissed the old man resoundingly, took the bottle from his hand and got to work.

Penthesilea had been informed of the progress being made on curing Black Lotus addiction which pleased her. Other news made her eyes go wide. Kodiak sensed her change in mood through the bloodbond. Kodiak: (inspeaking) *What is it, my dear?* He could feel her swallow hard. Penthesilea: (inspeaking) *Our handfasting. The guest list was 517 this morning, now it's at 650. And they are staking out a new temple this afternoon. Stadium seating for a thousand....* Kodiak managed to hide his reaction to that bit of news from the men around him. Kodiak: (inspeaking) *Can we run?* He was only half joking. Penthesilea: (inspeaking) *No. No.* takes a deep mental breath. *We can do this. We can. It's only a handfasting....* Kodiak wasn't so sure but they had more immediate matters to attend to so he sent his beloved a mental hug and went back to work. Penthesilea accepted the caress and did the same.
