I've been going over the last 1/2 to 1/3 of Book 3 and it's gonna be a bitch to get into shape! I got names to change, "dead" characters to delete, Smiley LOTS of new material to write and I HAVE to put in the stuff that will lead into Book 4 although, technically, if Book 3 were the end of the series that would be okay since having Our Hero and Heroine in bed on their handfasting night generating enough energy to make the walls of the castle glow would be a good place to stop!
Time to put my writer's hat back on....

Right now, I'm working on something that needs to go into Book 3 but won't really be gotten into until Book 4. I want to do the "set up" in Book 3 to alert the reader that all is not peaceful and quiet in the world. Trouble, big trouble is brewing and that isn't something I want to spring on my readers out of the blue, mainly when that is done to me, I don't like it. In my opinion, it is okay if the characters don't know that something bad is building up just below the horizon but the reader should be going "Oh [censored]!" as bits and pieces are revealed to them. So that is what I'm doing, writing a report of twenty massacres in twenty different locations directed at one specific warrior order.  I'll write a detailed section on the night of the massacre later, right now, I want to get this one scene which is bumping around in my head OUT and onto "paper."

I've worked a little more on the abovementioned "bit" of story. At the moment I'm chewing on details like titles within an order (and doing my best to avoid making it sound like an order of Catholic nuns) and "how what happened, happened" and how many survivors are left. The current count is around four hundred but I may scale that up or down as I haven't decided how many there were to start with. I'll need to pull out my original notes on the subject.

Gearing up for my next submission. It's an agency located in Madison, Wisconsin. They are a rather "unusual" outfit -- their corporate logo is a stylized skull. I like their style and I'd REALLY like to sign with them. I'm going to write a fresh query letter more in keeping with their style (the others are rather stuffy "business-style" letters) and see what happens. Since it's an email query, I don't have to make a run to the post office so I'll send it off when the "package" is ready and it feels right...

Here is the link to the website of the abovementioned agency. Those of you who know me well will understand why they appeal to me. I just wish I could ship them a case or two of Rudy's finest by way of introduction.

I'm slowly starting to get some idea of how to get where I need to go in Chapter 10. I haven't started writing it yet but a couple of ideas are starting to gel so I'm hopeful.

Smiley I have learned this evening, while working on a non-Book project, that the "Learn" button (which allows me to add new words to the word processing program's spell check) is disabled. What is worse, we apparently lost ALL of the unique vocabulary I created for the books out of the spell check dictionary when Skywise transferred everything from the overheating computer to this one. I can reload all of it by running my reference files (glossary, character list and atlas) through the spell check and hitting "Learn" repeatedly but ONLY if Skywise can get the "Learn" button enabled.

And people wonder why writers sometimes drink to excess.....

Since I am deep into Book 3, the groundwork for Book 4 needs to be laid. The situations in Book 4 will involve massive amounts of deceit, betrayal, manipulation and backstabbing by trusted associates -- something with which I am entirely TOO familiar personally! -- and I need to think about the new "cast list" and where and how they are introduced into the story. I've already got a couple inserted but I'm going to need to add at least a couple more. Smiley I need to think -- and come up with some cool names......

I've figured out how to deal with a problem I was having with Book 3 so it is now back on the desktop and I'm getting myself back into the writer's mindset. I'm hoping that once I'm there, I'll be able to keep going until 3 is finished since I'd like to have it ready to publish by this time next year.

Chapter 10 is done. Or at least, it is done enough that it can sit and gestate while I head into Chapter 11 and try to bring some order out of THAT mess! I am about one third/halfway through Book 3 -- how far along I am depends on how long the book ends up being but I'm getting near the end of a particularly "PITA" subplot and once it is out of the way, I can finish the main thrust of Book 3 and lay the groundwork for Book 4 which can occur just about any time after the end of 3. I'm thinking a year at least -- that way some relationships I want in place for 4 will be well developed by then and I won't have to write it all out which could take another book at least! -- or maybe a much as five years. I haven't decided yet. Either way, Our Hero and His Lady need to be handfasted and thoroughly bedded by the end of 3 and the groundwork laid for 4!

Well that settles THAT question!

I was going to publish under a pen name and I just "googled" my choice.

It is apparently VERY popular both for businesses and individuals.

Furthermore, there is a high order of probability that one of the "hits" is a relative since I was using my mother's maiden name and "kinfolk" of some degree are as thick as fleas on a stray dog in Southern Indiana. *sigh* My own handle isn't very "literary" but it will have to do. There are a lot of women out there using it (my surname is fairly common and my first name was pretty popular around the time I was born thanks to a popular actress) but at least I have state issued ID to prove I'm "me!"

I sometimes wonder.... what happens to the "damsels in distress" who don't get rescued?
What happens to the girls who find themselves in dire straits but because they aren't rich, young, pretty or some combination of the three, no one is coming to the rescue?  What if, for them, there is no "hero"?
Something to think about.....

I've been working on Chapter 10 of Book 3, smoothing out some rough patches in the narrative and finding places that need to be tweaked. I've just happened on something that will need to be fixed further on and I really need to hunt up that spot and make a note of it. On the plus side, most of Chapter 10 is "done" done.

It still needs to be read through again but Chapter 10 looks done. I've also gone into Chapter 11 and made enough rough changes so I'll remember what I want to do concerning the fix I mentioned earlier. So I'd say I got in a good night's work for something I decided to do on the spur of the moment.

I'm about 5 to 6 pages into Chapter 11. It is slow going. For one thing, the original source material was written "present tense" and it now needs to be changed to "past tense" and it is a PITA and a half to catch all the verb changes!  Also, matters that were touched on briefly in the original need to be expanded and errors in "internal logic" need to be addressed. And, of course, I need to remember that magick does NOT work where Our Hero and Heroine are currently operating which makes their lives interesting to say the least. Although later on in this section, it will be fun seeing Our Heroine channel her "Inner Buffy...."

Chapter 11 is now 45 pages long. Which is, I think, about 10 to 12 pages TOO long. The whole word document titled "Chapter 11" is 87 pages long.  At this rate "Chapter 11" is going to be Chapter 11, Chapter 12 and the first part of Chapter 13. Smiley
My brain hurts.

And I STILL have not heard back from the agency I queried in November. I've made allowances for the holidays but are they THAT far behind?

Working on Chapter 11. I "might" get it done this weekend if I get inspired. I'm thinking ahead to the last chapter now. I'm gonna need to write a handfasting that bears no resemblance to a Wiccan or Christian ceremony. Or any other recognizable Earth culture for that matter.

I've put Chapter 11 to bed for the night.  Not only is the brain giving out but the Warrior Princess is being a demanding little purr machine, climbing into my lap and demanding cuddles!
