	#2127 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Meanwhile, at the Lord Marshall�s camp.... Kodiak was in his tent, still puzzling over Alisa�s cryptic note when he heard a disturbance outside. Grabbing a blaster rifle by reflex, he bolted out of the tent. The sun had set only minutes before and it was still light. Light enough to see the dark, ominous cloud welling up in the distance and closing fast. �TO ARMS!� Kodiak bellowed and those who were not quick witted enough to have already seized their weapons hastened to do so. Kodiak was glad that he had cultivated the habit of removing his nanotech armor only when he had to while in the field. He activated it and in seconds, he was encased as his helmet emerged from his collar and covered his head. He wished that more of his army had had the same habit. Too many of them were in shirtsleeves or less and were scrambling to get their armor on. The cloud was closing fast and Kodiak could see that it was not a single entity but thousands, perhaps millions, of tiny flying creatures. He looked closely and recognized them by how they flew. Bats. He somehow doubted that they were fruit or insect eaters. Or that they intended to fly harmlessly over the camp. Kodiak�s fears were confirmed seconds later as the leading edge of the swarm reached the camp and the first of the bats swooped downward and attacked his troops. In less than a minute, the camp was engulfed in a swirling cloud of black death as the bats sank their fangs into any exposed flesh that they could reach. Any semblance of a coordinated defense vanished as the victims dropped their weapons and struggled to tear the bats from their flesh. Some succeeded only to be set upon by more of the creatures attracted by the smell of flowing blood. Kodiak and those who had managed to get their armor on in time opened fire with blasters set to a wide field of fire as that was the only way to combat the tiny creatures. But is was useless. There were too many of them and one by one the defenders were swarmed, their armor shorted out and torn from their bodies. Their screams rang in Kodiak�s ears as he fought on, spraying blaster fire around like water from a firehouse. He did not worry about hitting any of his companions. He was the only one still alive....

GRAB THE BIRTHDAY GIRL!! Miranda is lifted onto brawny shoulders and carried around the Ballroom to cheers and shouts of HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! It is no coincidence that she is set on her feet in front of Sir Alexander, who gives her a rather passionate birthday kiss.....

The look in his eyes as well as his body language convey the message that �trespassing� would not be looked upon favorably. Daemon assumes his best formal style and, having taken Miranda�s offered hand, barely brushes her knuckles with his lips. �The pleasure is mine, milady. Any friend of my sister�s is as a sister to me.� If Miranda found that news disheartening, she was careful not to show it as Daemon straightened and Penthesilea introduced him to Sir Alexander. The look exchanged between the two men assured Alexander that the Keyholder�s brother had no intention of pursuing the seamstress.
