Lord Duncan is very handsome but he is a powerful noble and Miranda is all too conscious of the difference in their social standing. Far better for her, a simple seamstress, to socialize with those closer to her own class.

	#1946 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] MoonCat and Spirit notice their mother�s pensive mood and intervene, dragging her back into the thick of the party. Lord Duncan bellows for attention and announces that dinner is ready to be served and everyone streams into the Dining Hall to eat. The meal is wonderful and when it is done, Duncan and the girls escort Penthesilea back to the Ballroom where her birthday cake sits on one table and a pile of presents on another. She makes her wish, cuts her cake and turns the serving over to the Pastry Chef. After that, she is put in a chair and her presents are presented to her one at a time and, for a time, she is able to pretend that the person she most wishes to see is there, somewhere in the crowd.

She knows that he is there and wonders why he is at such pains to be quiet. She decides to wait and see what he does, knowing that if he tries something completely unwarranted, her father will be strangling him with his own guts before he can blink. Lord Stephan steps around in front of her with an enormous bouquet of red roses. �For you, my Lady. The most beautiful woman I have ever seen.� Penthesilea knows insincere flattery when she hears it but plays along. If she can find out what he�s up to, so much the better. If he was up to something that put her people in danger, the sooner he was interred in a shallow grave in an undisclosed location, the better!
