The �nagging� that had been eating at him for hours was drawing him toward the hills on the eastern side of the Castle. There was no fighting going on there and he suspected that was for a reason. He found a spot to land and climbed out grabbing his sword out of his kit in addition to the blaster he wore on his hip. He didn�t know what sort of trouble, Penthesilea was in but she was a comrade in arms and had once been his lover. She was still very dear to him. He had few enough friends that could genuinely called �old friends.� He allowed his intuition to guide him.

His lover came out of the shadows with the necessary equipment. �I hope you left enough,� she said as she inserted the double pronged needle into the holes her partner had made in Penthesilea�s neck and pressed the vacuum seal against her skin . �Don�t worry, my love. I took enough to make her compliant, no more. And since she is what she is, her body is likely replacing her blood nearly as fast as we can take it, even with this.� With that, his partner tuned on the small pump that drew Penthesilea�s blood from her body far faster than any vampire could drink it. The sensation was not pleasant and Penthesilea gasped and then moaned in pain. Her captors laughed softly. In seconds, the jar was filled and the apparatus was withdrawn. The female packed the precious blood away along with her equipment. �Get that sent off and then wait for me at the tavern. We will both enjoy her before we turn her over to our employer.� His eyes gleamed in the darkness. �Her blood is extraordinary!� The female leaned forward and licked up the thin trail of blood leaking from Penthesilea�s neck. �Yes,� she purred, �it is.� They kissed and then the vampire woman vanished into the night.

	#1983 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Grai let his instincts lead him. He hadn�t lived as long as he had by ignoring them and they were screaming bloody murder at him. He heard a sound and ducked into cover. A few yards away a woman on horseback passed by. It wasn�t Penthesilea, he knew the way she sat a horse and could recognize her in the heat of battle by that alone but it seemed to him that following the woman�s back trail would be a very good idea. He turned away from her and intercepted her trail. He began to follow it back to her starting point. He smiled in the dark. His instincts were still screaming but now he had the feeling he was headed in the right direction.

The exchange was heated but quiet. Unfortunately, it was not quiet enough. As they rounded a bend in the trail, they were confronted by three of the wolves that had invaded the Castle lands. They�d had no hunting luck that night and were hungry for blood. The women wisely put their differences aside as the wolves began to stalk closer.

	#1985 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Grai emerged from the woods to find a horse drawn coach sitting unattended. His curiosity was immediately piqued. While coaches of this sort weren�t rare in this area, it was indeed odd to find one parked essentially in the middle of nowhere. The nearest road was some distance away and the Castle was beyond that. Quietly, Grai drew his sword and released the strap on his blaster. Whoever or whatever had brought that coach to this remote spot was likely up to no good and with distracting battles occurring at several sites within the Mile Wall, a great deal of mischief could be accomplished. His instincts were telling him that Penthesilea was near and in danger. He heard a faint sound, equal parts of a sob and a moan and moved toward it.

	#1986 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] The wolves showed more intelligence than one would normally expect. Slowly the began to circle the two women and it was obvious that they intended to surround them. Jasmine and Coral realized to their horror that in their haste to leave the Castle, they had failed to arm themselves with energy weapons, or even a gunpowder powered firearm. They had stakes, knives and Coral had a sword, none of which were the preferred weapons for taking on wolves! It seemed to Jasmine that the wolves were grinning at them... and then they attacked!

He didn�t want to alert anyone who might be on the other side to his presence before he was ready. He saw a shadowy male figure carrying a woman. Grai looked closely and saw her face clearly in the moonlight. �Penth!� He bellowed as he leaped to his feet and charged.

Then, in an instant, her eyes flashed a demonic red and the wolf was paralyzed. She pulled her knife from its scabbard and thrust it into the wolf�s heart. She let the light in her eyes fade as she pushed it aside and got up to find that Coral had finished the other two. �Glad to see that you can do something right,� Coral said. �I was afraid I was going to have to explain to father that his favorite had become wolf food.� Whatever response Jasmine might have made to that was deferred by the arrival of a squad of knights who had been searching for stray wolves and had heard Jasmine�s scream. The two women told the knights of Penthesilea�s disappearance. They were each taken up behind a knight and they rode in search of Lord Duncan.

He dodged to one side and slashed with his sword, laying open the vampire�s side. He screamed, more from rage than pain, as Grai turned toward him and took his ready stance. He was now where he wanted to be -- between the vampire and his victim. The vampire would escape with Penthesilea over Grai�s dead body!

If the vampire managed to get between them again, he could conceivably snatch up Penth and run. If he did that, Grai would never catch him.

He could see that the slash on the vampire�s side had already closed, the effect, Grai knew, of his consumption of Penthesilea�s blood. The vampire eyed Grai coldly and he returned it with interest. Then, with a hiss, the vampire did something intelligent. He drew the long knife strapped to his thigh and charged!

	#1993 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Grai�s sword flashed, blocking the vampire�s knife thrust and the battle was joined! While handicapped with a shorter weapon, the vampire�s strength and speed more than adequately compensated for that. But Grai was an expert swordsman and he had fought vampires before. The vampire snarled, extending his fangs and letting his eyes glow red. His intent was to unnerve his opponent but Grai was not moved. He fought with skill and finesse and waited for his chance. It was not long in coming. The vampire, frustrated with Grai�s unwillingness to lay down and die, charged him with his knife hand outstretched. Grai sidestepped, letting the vampire go by, and struck with all his strength at the back of his neck like the wrath of a vengeful god. The creature�s spine was no match for the Godblessed steel that Grai carried. It parted like a stalk of ripe wheat before the scythe and the force of the blow completely severed the head from the shoulders. The body dropped lifeless to the ground, the head continued onward for a few feet more.

	#1994 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Grai paused only long enough to be sure the vampire was dead. He had run across some odd vampires in the last few years who failed to fall to dust when killed. This one was one such but Grai had yet to find a vampire that could resurrect itself after decapitation and since the head had landed some feet west of the rest of the body, Grai wasn�t too concerned about it getting up and attacking him while his back was turned! He was infinitely more concerned with Penthesilea. He knelt beside her and examined her throat. The puncture wounds were neat and cleanly made and were closing as he watched. He felt for her pulse and found it, weak but growing stronger as he counted the beats. �Oh my little love,� he said as he gathered her up to carry her back to the Castle. He had long ago banished lust for her from his heart. He had no desire to find out if his immortality was proof against her curse but he had once loved her and to see her in such a condition tore at his heart. He would get her back to the Castle and see her safely tucked into her bed. Then he would leave before the love that he had once felt for her returned and overwhelmed his resolve. �Grai?� Grai looked down to see Penthesilea looking up at him. She was very weak but she recognized him. In the moonlight, he could see that the wounds on her neck were now completely closed, leaving not the faintest of marks behind. �Yeah,� he responded. �I can�t leave you alone for a minute, can I?� Penthesilea�s chuckle was weak but genuine. After a moment, she let herself drift off into much needed sleep. Dimly, she knew that Grai likely wouldn�t be around when she woke up but that was his way.

	#1995 Penthesilea The Keyholder's Bedroom The Keyholder awakes in her own bed feeling like herself for the first time since the evening of her birthday. She throws back the covers and notices that her rescuer changed her back into her nightgown. She grins and heads for the bathing room to make herself presentable. Washed and in clean clothes she heads for the dining hall. She strides through the deserted Castle and is relieved to hear sounds of life in the Dining Hall. She strides in, startling the weary souls sitting there. The Keyholder: I want a sirloin steak well done, four eggs fried and a side of fried potatoes. And enough tea to drown an orc! The Keyholder is surrounded by the crowd that grows once word of her recovery spreads. The Keyholder: Grai is responsible for my rescue. Get his rooms ready, if he's not already in them. The Keyholder eats and then heads for the Infirmary to help tend the wounded.

	#2003 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] News of the events at the Castle finally reached Kodiak in the field. He read the report written by the commander of the minions he�d left at the Castle and then spent a good half hour calling down every vile curse he could think of -- and his repertoire was vast -- on the bandits whose stubborn refusal to engage the army in open combat or move on had kept him from the Castle when it�s Lady had been so foully attacked. It was entirely too easy for Kodiak to imagine the scene and he found the thought of Penthesilea as the unwilling victim of a vampire�s lust infuriating. He did not pause to analyze the emotion. He simply felt it and once he had his rage under control, he made arrangements to be gone from the camp for a few hours. One of his mages would construct a Gate back to the Castle. He would check on Penthesilea and on the situation there. He would be back in camp in time for the morning muster. Alisa listened to his rage quietly. She had never seen him so enraged over the fate of an employer, especially one who had survived! Sworn Lady to him she might be but Penthesilea was considerably more than that to Kodiak whether he would admit it or not!

Her father finds her, a few hours before dawn, in the library sound asleep behind a pile of books, scrolls and journals. He had come to tell her that the Lord Marshall had just Gated into the Castle but decided not to. He would make Penthesilea�s apology to the Lord Marshall and explain why she needed her rest. Carefully, Duncan eased his sleeping daughter out of her chair and into his arms. He would put her to bed, meet with Kodiak and inform his brother, Apollo, that Penthesilea would be sleeping in and not meeting the dawn with a song as was her habit.
