Suddenly, the night is split by the scream of a terrified steer and the herd breaks into a stampede as more screams rend the air along with another... alien... sound..

He was getting reports from the gremlin spotters and going mildly nuts at the delay, scant as it was, between the report and the translation. He firmly resolved to find out how one learned to understand Gremlinese as soon as this mission was over!

	#236 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Sir Michael�s team opened their bikes up all the way and consequently arrived at the pasture within moments of the stampede�s start. The terrified cattle thundered over a low rise with their slightly less terrified herders swept along with them. The team parted to let the stampede pass as they sped toward the spot that the gremlins were directing them too.

	#227 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] �There they are!� Ahead of them, they could see three misshapen figures hunched over the bodies of three steers. �Fire at will!� Michael ordered and the lead bikers opened up with their bike mounted blasters. Two of the beasts broke and fled but the third was caught by first one and then another blaster bolt and it fell stunned and sprawling to the ground.

	#238 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] The majority of the team swept past the fallen monster in hot pursuit of the other two. Three of the Guardsmen stopped long enough to take the beast�s head and then roared off after the rest of the team.

	#241 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] The gremlins reported that the beasts had split up and as much as he hated to, Michael ordered the hunting party to split as well. They couldn�t take a chance on one of the creature�s escaping while they took on the other. Michael took Alexander and two of the Guardsmen with him while Kevin took the rest of the Knights and Guardsmen. Michael couldn�t say why he disposed his forces as he did, he just had a feeling that Kevin would need them more than he would.

Privately, Michael believed that he and Alexander were a better choice to meet the beast�s initial attack. The beast agreed as the death screams of the men behind them caused both knights to bring their bikes around to face the horror behind them.

	#243 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] The monster rose up before them, a nightmare combination of dragon, ape and frog, the crushed remains of the air bikes and their riders under its clawed feet. It opened its mouth to emit a hissing roar and they could see that its froglike mouth was full of fangs. Then it lunged at them and there was no time for further observation.

	#245 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Sir Michael�s call for backup was heard and Sir Kevin led the charge. Unfortunately before they could come to Michael and Alexander�s assistance, another beast dropped out of the trees, rending two Guardsmen and sending their riderless air bikes careening off into the forest where they crashed. Kevin heard the Lady Knight Magda scream a battle challenge in her native tongue and saw her draw first blood on the beast with her battle ax as she made a close pass barely avoiding a grab at her. As he opened up his own air bike to join the battle, Kevin had to admit that the Lady Knight had brass ones.

	#247 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Alexander fired his blaster until it was empty just to assure himself that it really was ineffective. As he tossed it aside, he consoled himself with the thought that the flashes the weapon produced when it hit the beast distracted it enough for Michael to get away from it after he had to dive off of his bike to avoid being clawed. Then he drew his sword as Michael evaded it again and prepared to test his theory that the thing was more vulnerable to blades than it was to energy.

	#248 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Having found that their energy weapons were completely useless, the other knights and the remaining Guardsmen were taking on the second beast with bare steel. They had the beast more or less surrounded but Kevin feared that it might try to break out. If it did, it would cut a bloody swath through the team. He ordered everyone to remain mounted and be prepared to take evasive action at a second�s notice. Then he took advantage of the beast�s distraction to swoop in and strike a blow.

	#249 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Alexander dove into a tuck and roll as the beast sent its claws whistling through the space that the Knight had occupied. Michael took advantage of the creature�s distraction and landed a mighty blow with this sword which opened a deep wound in its side. He didn�t have time to either admire his work or follow up on it. The beast turned with lightning speed as Michael leaped back out of range.

	#250 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] The beast was getting desperate and both men knew it. It would either rush them in a last ditch attempt to kill them or it would flee. Neither man considered those viable options. They much preferred a third -- the beast dead and the two of them alive! The beast was breathing heavily and what it used for blood poured from its side. Michael pulled a rod from his leg sheath and activated it. In seconds, it lengthened into an eight foot long heavy boar spear with a wicked looking razor sharp spearhead. The men exchanged looks and nodded. Alexander moved in close to tempt the beast with Michael hidden behind him. Alexander could see the creature gathering itself. �Get ready,� he said in a low voice and heard Michael�s equally low reply. With a roar, the creature leaped at them and Alexander leaped aside revealing Michael behind him. Too late, the beast saw Michael kneeling with the butt of his spear braced on the ground. It impaled itself on the spear and died even as it reached futilely toward the man who had killed it. To be certain, Alexander moved in and with a mighty blow, cut off the head that fell to the ground with a dull thud.

Three of them were now on foot since the beast had managed to disable their air bikes and two others were wounded but not seriously. The fact that neither Michael nor Alexander had responded when the beast had attacked them was in back of everyone�s mind. They had no time for despair but the possibility that both were dead grew greater with each passing minute.

	#252 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] By mutual agreement, Sir Rondelas and Dame Elena had carried their war bows on the hunt rather than hunting bows. They were thankful that they had done so since both were positive that ordinary hunting arrows would not have penetrated the monster�s tough hide. As it was, their war arrows were barely wounding it but since there was always the possibility of finding a soft spot, they continued to fire while staying on the move. During their training for the mission they had frequently engaged in friendly competition on the archery range. They were still competing but the stakes were much higher than mere bragging rights.

	#253 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Sir Kevin flashed past the beast, gouging a furrow in its flesh as he passed and causing it to roar in rage. He came around in time to see another rider score a hit as well. Then an arrow flew out of nowhere and struck the beast in the eye. It reared up and another arrow pierced the throat. The warriors did not waste the opportunity, they rushed in and within moments, the beast was dead. Pausing only long enough to be sure, Sir Kevin signaled for those still mounted to follow him and they roared off in search of Sir Michael and Sir Alexander.

	#254 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Kevin and his group roared into the clearing where Michael and Alexander had been ambushed clearly expecting to find the two men dead. Michael looked up at their arrival having just succeeded in pulling his spear from the monster�s carcass. �What took you so long?� Alexander stood nearby, cleaning gore from his sword and grinning. Kevin and the assembled warriors stared at them in shock for a heartbeat. Then Kevin began to laugh and the others joined in.

	#257 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] A few hours later, MoonCat was able to confirm that the creature reproduced asexually and that no male of the species was still at large. Everyone relaxed marginally. Until the beasts� lair was found and it was confirmed not to shelter any young, everyone was going to stay a bit on edge.

	#262 [Rewritten by Penthesilea] Once they had isolated the toxin, MoonCat and Spirit had little trouble with the analysis. Coming up with an antitoxin was more of a trial but they stayed with it. Privately, they were fairly convinced that Penthesilea would come out of it on her own given enough time. The problem was that they didn�t know how much time that would take and having their mother remain in a coma ageless and unchanging for a century or two would likely be hard to explain. Sooner or later, the world would know that the Keyholder Penthesilea and her daughters were immortal but they would just as soon have control over that revelation and they were sure that Penthesilea would agree! So they kept on working. Besides, as Spirit pointed out, if any more of these critters showed up, they would need the antitoxin for others not as tough as their mother!
