"Life" finally got out of the way. I folded and cut all the pages for the Spates -- page count is around 800 and it's about 3½ inches thick -- and sewed them together. I get a little cooperation from "life" tomorrow, I'll finish making the standing press and the finishing press. Then the next day, I can start gluing. Once the text block is finished, I'll start on the cover.
The end is still a ways off but it's in sight.

I forgot to mention that I did a quick and dirty measurement on the text block once I had it in the press and squished down as far as I could. It's just under three inches thick and yes, it weighs a ton!

While some of the glue went where I didn't want it to and it isn't as smooth as the perfectionist in me would like, I'm satisfied with the gluing job I did. Today, I carefully measured and marked the book cover board for the cover. Since I'm making the cover very thick, I'll need to cut four covers and one spine rather than just two covers. (Because of the way it will be assembled, it only needs one spine piece.) Tonight, between laundry, dishes and making dinner, I'll work on the design that goes on the cover. Naturally, there is no image of it online that I can copy to help me out...

Spoke too soon. I found one. It needs to be tidied up and the proportions adjusted but it's the right size so that should speed the project up a bit.

I am SO growly! Smiley
I got the cover boards cut, all except the spine. THAT'S the good news.
The bad news is that the book cloth is a good two inches too narrow for the covers. All I've found so far is precut 17 inches wide and I need it to be at least 19 inches and 20 would be better.
So... I have to figure a way around this problem. Smiley

Found a source for a fabric that "should" work as book cloth once paper has been fused to it. I'm going to get enough that if it doesn't, I'll have plenty to make a medium weight jacket.

I ordered enough fabric to cover the book and to make a new jacket -- once I can get to the sewing machine that is! I checked using a scrap of the same fabric -- different color -- and I should be able to put the cover design on like I planned.
So I guess I'd better get the design finalized! *starts digging out the french curves and circle templates.....*

I've been working on the design that goes on the front of the Spates Catalog and I'm finally satisfied! It needs to be about an inch bigger but a pass or two through the copier will fix that. I'll need a smaller one to put on the spine but that's no problem either. While I'm waiting for the fabric to arrive, I'll figure out the best place to "set up shop" for the fusing process and how much fabric I'm going to need to put backing on. I also need to get the leather ready for the strap that will let me put a padlock on it. [You can't be too careful with books that have "things" trying to crawl out of them!] Then -- finally -- I'll be able to start the final stages of putting the book together.

The fabric for the book cover is finally on the way. It should be here on Monday. I got the iron on adhesive today and I already have the paper -- just have to FIND it -- and I figured out yesterday that I'll need to make a 20 x 30 piece of bookcloth. That's a bit bigger than what I "should" need but I'd rather have too much than not enough. You can always trim off the extra but if it's too small, I'd have to start over.

The fabric for the bookcloth is in Indianapolis so it will definitely be here on Monday.
The end of the Spates Catalog project is in sight!

The fabric arrived today and it's thinner than I expected.  Smiley It is certainly a lighter weight than the Trigger Poplin I used to buy. I think it will work but I have have to back with sketch paper -- which I have -- rather than the tracing paper the instructions say to us. I will test a small piece and see how it works out. I have a feeling that it will be too lightweight for a jacket which bums me no end.

I found out why the fabric is so lightweight. It's 100% polyester. Smiley Which wouldn't be a problem for certain applications but I'm afraid that if I try to fuse Heat Bond to it, it will melt. Pure polyester does NOT take heat well. *sigh* I checked another site I where I was looking for Trigger Poplin and the poplin they carry is a poly/cotton blend (65%/35%). They don't sell online but there is a store listed on their "Where to Buy" page that is close to where we shop on Thursdays. I will consult with Skywise and hold off on doing anything until I can check them out.

I dug around in my fabric boxes and found some fabric that could work. It's heavier than what I want but what I want is nowhere to be found and the heavier fabric "could" be more authentic. I'll confer with Skywise when he gets home....

The black fabric for the bookcloth has been washed and is in the dryer. The white fabric for the idea Skywise gave me has also been washed and dried. Now I need to get some fusible interfacing and a yard of "liquid lame" if I can find some this time of year. I have some stashed around here but I have no idea where.....

We pre-ordered some goodies from Spirit Halloween today: Four pairs of Ecto-goggles, two ghost traps and two PKE meters, all Old school. I'm hoping to pick up two more traps and PKE meters when Spirit Halloween opens their seasonal stores in the fall.

I'd prefer the ATC gear but those are only available as 3-D printer files -- which I have -- but I don't have access to a printer so "upgrades" will have to wait.

"I" made bookcloth last night so this week will see work on the Spates Catalog resume. I'm not sure how fast the work will go -- some parts I'll be making it up as I go along -- but the end of the tunnel is definitely in sight.

I glued the first layer of book board to the bookcloth yesterday, put a TON of weight on it to keep it from curling/bowing/warping while it dries and left it on the kitchen table in the Old House. I don't know how long it is going to take -- it's humid -- but it's not like I have a deadline. I'm figuring it out as I go along so taking it slow is sort of a "given". Today I'll dig out the leather and hardware for the locking strap and start working on that. Need to find my leather tools too.....

Iz happy.  Smiley
I took the book cover for the Spates Catalog off the table and transferred it to a work bench and did a "test fit". I put the text block in -- it fits! -- and closed it up.
It looks perfect and.... like a "real" book. There's still a lot of gluing to do and I have to decide exactly how I'm going to put the leather "lock" on -- yes, I dug out my leather tools today -- and the front design still needs to be made but the end is definitely in sight and I think I'm going to be very happy with the results.  Smiley

Iz grumpy.
I wasted uncounted megabytes looking for the plans for an ecto containment unit and all I found was pictures of guys building units.
No plans.
No materials lists
No cutting list.
Just guys using power tools with NO USEFUL INFORMATION AT ALL.  Smiley

All the final prep work is done.

Tomorrow (later today actually) the text block will be glued into the covers. If I screw up I'll have to start over -- with the covers at least.
I'd cross my fingers but that would make it hard to do the gluing......

IT IS DONE!

Hopefully correctly but I won't know that until tomorrow or Thursday when everything is completely dry. THEN I get to glue in the interior book covers (double thickness covers are recommended for big books and this sucker is HUGE!  Smiley)
After that, all that is left is putting on the lock pieces, turning in the edges of the cover, putting in the interior cover sheets and then....
the emblem that goes on the front and maybe, if I can cut it small enough, the same emblem on the spine.
THEN it will be done and I will be a good candidate for committment if I decide to make another one in less than five years! More  Smiley
Now, having washed the glue off my hands, I'm gonna get prone before I start laundry and dishes.....

I decided -- due to the fact that the sky was going to open up before I finished -- to wait to glue the inner covers in. I've worked a little on the lock pieces, mainly making templates so everything will line up. I'm hoping that tomorrow's predicted rain holds off until I have a chance to work on the catalog.
