	#4959 Penthesilea Penth puts her arm around him. He doesn't look too steady. Can you "step" us there? I could do with a change of clothes. She looks down at the slashed and bloody sacrificial gown Angelique had had put on her. I think they cut my other clothes off and this rig wasn't made for fighting in.

	#4961 Penthesilea The corpse falls over with a wet thud. Penthesilea wonders why it didn't disintegrate like most vampires do but she is too worried about Kodiak to give it much thought. She gives him space but stays within a step of him -- just in case!

She learns that Keil is on his way to the harbor, intending to sail to the mainland with his five hostages, one of whom -- Hassan Ben Asad Khalid -- the Fates say would be the absolute best choice for the Island's new Prince, even if he is a vampire! If Keil succeeds in killing Khalid the next leader of Madridoor will lead the nation to its eventual destruction. Almost as an afterthought, Hecate drops in to remove her spell on Penthesilea so that her blood is no longer poisonous to vampires.

	#4972 Penthesilea *When Penthesilea returns to the bedroom, she finds Kodiak seemingly asleep. She resists the nearly overwhelming urge to lay down beside him. Instead, she quickly washes the dried blood off of her body and gets dressed. Then, she arms herself to the teeth. If she is going to have to take on a boatload of vampires and assorted thugs by herself, she's going in prepared! Killing Keil could wait if it had too but her family has impressed upon her the importance of rescuing his hostages and Penthesilea is very aware of the advantages to her new country if she manages to rescue Madridoor's future Head of State and other VIPs. Kodiak doesn't even stir when she leans over him and gives him a gentle kiss. She intends to come back, but... you never know. When she goes back into the living room, her cousin Hermes is there. Without a word, they vanish in a shower of sparkles, headed for the harbor...

One of the thousands that made the daily crossing between the island and the mainland. Hermes: This is as close as I can go with you. The God frowned. Something is interfering. Penthesilea: That doesn't sound reassuring. She looked the situation over. I can make it in from here. I've gotten into more heavily guarded places. She smiled at her cousin. Thanks for the lift. Hermes: You're welcome, Penthesilea. Then he was gone and Penthesilea began slipping from shadow to shadow toward the ship.....

The surviving guards ran as their weapons were rendered useless, joining the futile press of the workers as they fought to get out the sealed doors.

	#4983 Penthesilea Penthesilea had reached the side of the ship without being seen and had taken cover among the huge cargo containers waiting to be loaded. There were several hatches and gangways open to permit the loading of cargo and she considered the best way to get in. If Kodiak were here.... Penthesilea stopped that thought. There was something wrong with him and if this mission had not been so supremely important she would have been sitting by his side, waiting for him to wake up and worrying herself into a meltdown. Instead, she was going to do the job and take her anxiety and frustration at not being able to be with the man she loved out on any and all persons unlucky enough to oppose her! She snarled to herself. Someone was going to pay... She waited, patiently, until the activity on the dock ebbed away from the hatch she was watching. Then, quick and silent as a cat, she ran up the short gangway and into one of the ship's cargo holds....

She quickly located a wall and moved along it, looking for the ladder or hatch that allowed access into the hold from the rest of the ship. She found it in short order. It was a ladder that went up into the darkness overhead. The light in the hold was low and she was in black, so she decided to risk being seen and ascended the ladder. At the top she found a walkway that encircled the hold and a door. Carefully, silently, she eased the door open....

	#4985 Salanthos With no one still interested in attacking her, Sal came out from behind the shattered crates, cradling her hurt shoulder. The whole warehouse was going up in flames. She frowned at the piles of powdered black lotus. Fire was a good purifier, but it might not be enough to cleanse the BL by itself - besides releasing who-knew what kind of fumes. A few minutes work with the sprinklers' water-source soaked the BL powder, and she shoveled it into one wet heap on the floor. A handful of quick-growing spores and her magic had the stuff decomposing at an accelerated rate, rotting into a fine, dark soil. That would quickly dry to dust and burn in the fires, and end up as innocent as any other ashes. Leaving the BL to disintegrate, Sal again moved through the warehouse to find the secretary again. Those two still had to be gotten out. It would have been much easier, Sal found herself thinking, if they hadn't been there. She could've firebombed the place from afar, and been done by now.

The way was clear and Penthesilea slipped into the passage, carefully closing the door behind her. Then she began to search. She had a general idea of where the captives might be held in this sort of ship and it was not in the cargo area. Madridoor trafficked in slaves, it was an open secret, and ships such as this were outfitted to carry such cargo. The logical place for Keil's captives to be held was the slave hold and such holds were in the center of the ship where they could be easily concealed. Penthesilea began to make her way toward the middle of the ship.

The air was stifling hot, the fire was spreading to the furthest corners of the warehouse, including a weapons storeroom thus far untouched. Having left them in a safe place, Sal stepped back to the palace, which was abuzz with rumors. Her shoulder really bothered her - the collarbone had been cracked, and a chunk was missing from her upper arm where the rebounded bullet had struck. As for the rest, she was scraped and bruised, a bit singed around the edges, but she could manage.

	#4992 Penthesilea Penthesilea moved deeper into the ship. As she did so, she heard the ship's engines, which were idling, change their speed. The ship was getting underway. She slipped back into the shadows as a crewman walked by. It was getting harder to escape detection. She was going to be spotted sooner or later. It turned out to be.... sooner....

	#4993 Penthesilea *Penthesilea heard a noise behind her. She turned. Two armed crewmen stood not twenty feet behind her. They pulled their sidearms and fired. Penth didn't waste her breath with cursing. She ran down the passage and through the door at the end. She skidded to a stop. She was on a walkway that encircled a large room filled with men, many of them armed, and equipment. The floor was a good thirty feet down. The commotion the men behind her were making had alerted the guards on the walkway. They were coming her way, two on each side. Penth pulled a small grappling hook from her belt, pulled out some line and snapped it around the railing. Then she went over the rail, letting the line out as fast as she dared. When the shooting started, she cut the line and dropped the last ten feet to the floor. A convenient guard broke her fall and she dived into the shadows, bullets zinging all around her...

	#4995 Penthesilea �Okay,� Penth muttered to herself, �let's play hide and seek!� She pulled a tiny bomb from her pocket -- it was really little more than a noisemaker -- flipped the switch and sent it sailing up and out over the equipment. A few seconds later, a resounding bang attracted the attention of everyone in the room. That's when Penthesilea made her move trying to get to the exit door she had spotted on her way down to the floor. �There she goes!� Penth heard the shout and looked up. A man on the catwalk was pointing a rifle in her direction. She dodged and he missed. She pulled her sidearm and fired. He fell over the rail, already dead. Unfortunately, the sound of the shot had given away her position....

As she walked down the hall, her attention was momentarily diverted by a low-voiced wisp of conversation nearby. One person spoke softly, just out of sight The Queen of Blood isn't going to be happy they killed Angelique. I thought the changes would mostly prevent dying. Another person replied Obviously not always. Anyway, she'll probably send Grath out later... The conversation faded as the two moved away. Sal filed it away in the back of her mind, then put it aside to deal with the task at hand. Namely, getting onto the ship and taking Keil down. Sal reached the dock as the ship started to get underway. It was just beginning to move sluggishly as she slipped into the water nearby. She was a good swimmer, even with all she'd been through she easily swam to the far side of the ship. The smooth steel was fairly easy to climb once she had magicked clingy suckers, and she climbed to a row of portholes without incident. Cautiously, she peered into them one by one, until she found an empty cabin. Getting in through the porthole was difficult, but not impossible, and she soon thumped gently to the floor inside. As she got herself upright, though, footsteps sounded in the corridor and the door began to swing open.
