LOL... I don't know a lot about cars but I do know what I like... The older, rear wheel drive ones with a LOT of power and that take up about 4 or more parking spaces.... Cheesy

The smallest car we've ever owned was a 95 Ford Escort Wagon... Great on gas but felt like a shoebox on wheels... Son could easily kick the back of the front passenger seat in that one even when he was about 3 years old, it was tiny!

Largest cars: The 92 Lincoln Town Car and our current car, the Fleetwood. The bigger the better in my opinion! Cheesy

I've been poking around looking at used Windstar vans from 1999 to 2003 'cause I'm getting the unsettling feeling that we could be in the market soon. It's been 16 days since Skywise authorized the auto shop to replace the engine in the van and as of Monday, they hadn't started on it yet. We were told when the repair was authorized that an engine had been found and that they'd get on it as soon as it was delivered to the shop. We haven't heard a word since and we're getting concerned. Skywise will call the shop first thing in the morning and find out what the "heck" is going on. If the purchase of the engine has fallen through, we'll have to make some decisions.

The auto shop told Skywise when he called that the engine for the van had finally come in but as of this afternoon when he drove by the shop on the way to the bank, the van was still parked out in the back. So it will be next week -- Tuesday at the earliest 'cause I don't think that they'll be open Monday -- before they start on it. *sigh* We're hoping that by the time it's ready, the weather will have settled down so I'll be able to drive it home with minimal panic attacks.....

Skywise just talked to the shop. The engine is in and the van is out for alignment. If they can get it ready in the next couple of hours, we'll run over and get it today. If not, weather permitting, we'll get it tomorrow.

Skywise and I have been talking the last couple of days and we're agreed: the van will be 20 years old this year and new engine notwithstanding, if we have another major -- costly -- breakdown we'll replace it rather than repair it. We'd like to get at least another year out of it but we aren't holding our breath. With that in mind, I've started nosing around to find out what's out there that might fit our needs.
We need passenger room for six (the four of us + kitty carriers) and I'd like more cargo space if we can get it without having to take the rear seat out -- which is a pain as we've discovered. Something not too old but old enough that we won't be taking a serious hit when we go to the Dept of Motor Vehicles to register it and when we insure it. "Red" would be a plus but I'll consider saving up to have it repainted if red turns out to be hard to find and/or the price is right on something of another color. Since Ford is replacing the E-Series vans with the Transit, it's possible that deals may be had. We'll have to see... which is why I'm now in "research mode."

Doing research tonight (still wading through the Scrivener user's manual as eyes permit) looking for something that has more (or as much!) cargo space than what we have that has enough passenger room for 4 adults and 5 cats in their carriers. (We try to avoid taking all of them to the vet at the same time but sometimes, it's unavoidable.) So far the 2010 E-150 Passenger Van is the only thing that has enough seating and more cargo room. It has seating for eight (buckets in front and two benches in the rear). The sliding door on the passenger's side is wide enough for the people sitting in the back to get out without climbing over the seat in front. I don't know if the seats fold down on not. I'd prefer two rows of buckets and a bench in the last row but I don't know if such a thing exists in this model. *sigh* More research but not tonight. Vision is getting blurry.

So far, I'm not seeing anything that would eliminate the E-150 Wagon from consideration. Moonie is okay with a bench seat instead of a bucket seat ("I'd be all over it!" was her response to my question about it.) I've yet to find out if the rearmost bench seat folds down or has to be removed. It may depend on the model and year. Of course if there is enough cargo space with the seat in place, it won't matter unless we're gonna haul something HUGE -- which we do only rarely. Skywise seems agreeable and that's another plus.

Oookkkkkkaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy........... I am now officially hunting for a new van which we'll get when we find the "perfect" one. I just asked Skywise if I found a suitable/perfect van would we buy it now and he said "yes." He pointed out, reasonably, that we have no idea how much longer the van will last. It's rusting out badly for one thing and that's just the rust we can see. He's also talking about renting a car to use at least once during our September vacation trip to Louisville since he doesn't trust the car (an '02) to get us there and back without problems. He doesn't worry about getting to work and back -- a fairly short commute for this area -- but the thought of a long car trip in it makes him nervous. So I'm going to be hunting in earnest and telling Uni exactly what we need and want.

Making out a "shopping checklist" for the "Urban Terrain Troop Transport" hunt.

What? You KNOW I'd have to stick a "STAR WARSy" name on the project!

This looks to be a long hunt. My searches are coming up with tons of "cargo" vans but not many "passenger" vans. Or at least passenger vans that carry 8 passengers rather than 12 or 15...
*sigh* As soon as I'm sure about exactly what we want I'll start petitioning the Universe to make it manifest. AND local/within easy driving distance. Finding the ideal van will do us no good if it's nearly 2,000 miles away! We'd kinda like to kick the tires and take it for a test drive before we sign on the dotted line...

Skywise and I were talking on the way home from Bloomington today and he's about decided that we won't be replacing the car -- when we replace it -- with another Taurus. His thinking -- and I agree -- is that once he's retired (which WILL happen during the "life" of our next vehicles) our needs will be different. So he's thinking of either getting a second van as a "backup" to our primary workhorse or a SUV. We've discovered that a sedan really doesn't fit our lifestyle that well now. The girls are adults and need more room than a car's backseat can provide, especially on a longish roadtrip. Then too, when the van has been in the shop, the car has been a barely adequate substitute on shopping days. So... it looks like we'll eventually have one van and maybe two or a van and an SUV. I'm leaning toward an SUV 'cause I've always wanted one. I'll insist on 4WD 'cause we DO get heavy snow out here from time to time and besides, with 4WD I could call it our "All Terrain Troop Transport" to go with our "Urban Terrain Troop Transport"!

I thought I'd found one but the seating configuration eliminated the cargo space -- which is the main reason I'm looking at E-150 vans. *sigh* I'll get back to the search tomorrow.

This would be nearly perfect if it wasn't a 1999 (which is only a little "younger" than the '95 we're driving) and wasn't out of state. *sigh* Oh well, it's a "visual" I can use.....

This is what a 2010 looks like. I'd prefer a brighter red than the picture shows but you really can't tell from a picture.

SmileyThe van is parked until further notice. The brakes need work now. More Smiley! I'm still looking for a new van and I'm not having any luck. Anything that we "might" consider is in Ohio, Missouri, Montana, Minnesota, Texas or California! More than half of the "not Cargo" ones I find are outfitted with wheelchair lifts which eliminates the cargo room -- which is my main reason for wanting an E-150 van. The brake problem was made manifest while we were in town having lunch and to add insult to injury, the free auto ads magazine that comes out weekly that I intended to pick up was no where to be found. Even the display rack was gone so that on top of the unmistakable sound of metal on metal every time Skywise put on the brakes made for a really Smiley afternoon.....

I have my fingers crossed. I found this tonight. It's in Kokomo, IN which is a bit far from here and it is a bit older than I wanted but the pickings are slim to put it mildly. It has 110,500+ miles on it which works out to around 8,000 miles a year. Anyway, I'll bring it to Skywise's attention when he gets home and see what he thinks. Moonie approves although she says that it could be "redder." I said we couldn't really tell from a photo but a new paint job is possible.

I've been sitting here with the Queen in my lap looking at the van on dealer's website. It doesn't have a whole lot of bells and whistles but it has cargo room out the wazoo --which is one of the main reasons for getting an E-150 --and from the photos, it appears to be in decent shape for an 11 to 12 year old vehicle. We won't know for sure until we see it and Skywise gets behind the wheel for a test drive. Given the dearth of choices we have, if it meets our minimum standards we'll get it. The engine and transmission on the Windstar are both in good shape but the body is rusting horribly and there's no telling what's rusting away underneath where we can't see it. It's "Burgundy Metallic Clearcoat" and I don't know if that's "red" enough but paint can be changed -- especially if you don't have to replace the transmission right off the bat like we had to do with the Windstar.... I think I'll look up which shades of red Ford has been using.....

I'm getting damned antsy to get to Kokomo to check out that van and we HAVE to wait until Saturday and if we don't go this Saturday, it will be another week since they aren't open on Sundays. If it was closer, we might be able to do it on a weekday but with it being a nearly two hour drive each way, there just wouldn't be enough time. *sigh* The dealer has had it for over 2 months so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't get sold before we can look at it. I would really HATE to have to start looking again......
