Don't worry about being late getting back to the discussion. FuryRising and I found things to talk about as you probably noticed.  Grin I agree with the "only point when you intend to kill" view and .45 autos are at the top of my list. When I go get my CCPermit, I'll find out about shooting ranges. With the number of guns in this county, there has to be a shooting range around here somewhere!!

Remember, you don't HAVE to have CCW to own and fire a weapon.  It's really a good faith action more than anything.  Additionally, some states (I don't know about Indiana) have rules about taking an approved Gun Safety course (the NRA's one is usually accepted), and some of those require you to bring a weapon with you.

I intend to find and take the NRA's course as soon as I have my own gun. I figure, first the gun, then the Concealed Carry and the training. Kinda hard to learn to shoot a gun without one!  Grin

I've come to the conclusion that I need something along the lines of "Handguns for Dummies" -- which doesn't exist, I've looked -- because all the writers in these gun magazines assume that you understand what they are talking about!  Smiley And I don't. And it's hard to ask questions when you can't figure out what the questions should be!!!! Again....Smiley

Still looking for the right gun?

Have you tried going to a gun shop and asking some questions, as you're actually holding the gun?

Still looking. I haven't made it to a gun shop yet. The Post Office has been doing their very, VERY best to drive us crazy by changing Skywise's work schedule at the last legal (under the contract) minute. The next time we are near a Dick's Sporting Goods, I'm going to go see what looks interesting.

As far as learning what folk are talking about, one of the easiest ways to get familiar is to start with the parts of different weapons. These days, you can download the owner's manual for nearly any current weapon, and quite a few of the older ones. This helps in figuring out if someone is talking about a gun part, or a technique or environmental quality or effect.

I really need to get familiar with the jargon. What I'm most concerned about is a gun store clerk pressuring me to buy something that isn't suitable. Which is why I want to have a fairly clear idea of what I want to look at before I go in.

LOL
I have noticed that in general, gun store clerks are anything but pushy. They tend to be a laid-back breed, sometimes to the point of having to holler at them to get them to notice you!

I guess that I'm going to find that out. I went to a sporting goods store that used to carry handguns. It was a local chain and well established but it was bought out by an out of state chain and they no longer carry handguns. Long guns of every description, air guns and paintball guns but no handguns. *Snark* Long guns I can get at Wal-Mart for crying out loud!!  And my quest to locate an easily accessible firing range is giving me fits as well. I thought I had found one just a few miles away but they only have an archery range. I have space enough to set up my OWN archery range, darn it!! I need to keep stray lead under control! And yeah, I checked the NRA listings looking for a firing range. No luck.

On the plus side, my NRA membership has come through and I'm happily reading the first issue of America's 1st Freedom that I've had for a while. Once this vacation is out of the way, I'll be back doing research...

I'm looking at Walther PPKs and P38s tonight. I absolutely LOVE them but I don't know if I can afford them now.

Well, I am quite pleased!

Our concealed weapons permits came in yesterday! Not that they are much more than a certificate of good faith, but still nice to have. If one reads the regulations on the permit licensing, it becomes clear that the wording of the regulation is such that an officer can use his/her judgment on whether it applies in any given situation. So, as I said, it's more of a certificate of good faith than anything else.

Now I want to wear a pistol somewhere---just because I can! LOL

This is what I was looking at today while poking around the military displays at the IMS. The one I handled was unloaded, of course, and it felt a little heavy but that it nothing a little weight training wouldn't fix. I rather startled Skywise as I firmly moved him out of the way so I could get my hands on the pistol...
I think it has dawned on him that I'm seriously looking at handguns.

I like the 92FS Inox on that page. Which particular one were you looking at?

I've decided that I'm getting a Ruger .45 next. (I think it might be P45 even... I can't remember).  Went into Sportsman's Warehouse a few weeks ago to look, and that is the one that felt right, which is usually a good sign.

It was the 92, I believe, standard U.S. Army issue. The young man on duty along with Skywise decided that it would fit nicely in my purse -- I carry one that is designed to hold a small laptop 'cause I need to carry so much stuff -- although I'm more inclined to waist carry or a shoulder holster.

Any way you go, you'll have to train yourself to draw quickly.

They make special holsters that can be clipped into just about any purse that make the gun easily accessible, I believe.

They even make special purses with holsters built in but my natural instinct is to reach for my right hip which is seriously weird since I'm left handed.

I think you'd be happy with a Ruger 92. You may want to get a shoulder rig for it, with the spare mag pouches on the opposite side from the holster. If you do, you will want the kind with tie-down straps on both sides, as we women have an additional "jiggle factor"  with mammaries that can cause the holster to shift position uncomfortably. The tie downs are designed to hook to a belt, but will hook directly to belt loops as well. They can also be modified with garter clips from your local fabric store to clip to undies or hose/garter belt instead if that gives better concealment with adequate access. They can also usually be removed if there is enough weight and balance to keep everything in place without them.

You may also want to look into a paddle type holster, as those are designed to slip into the waistband of pants without the need for a belt, making them very adjustable. There is another type of paddle holster that is to be used with a belt, and that type has two slots for the belt to pass behind it. Those are quite stable, if sometimes at an odd angle.

Happy shopping!

Thanks, I'll look into it. I'm going to be locating area gun shops that are along our regular routes so we won't have to go chasing all over to find what I want. Gas is precious these days!!

My bad hon! I was thinking the beretta 92 looked much like the ruger .45, and that I think you'd like the ruger as well. I just got totally scrambled....sorry!
